how does google make $ & other interweb adv ?
so once in a while i go to www.google.com and search something..... i find the website and go to it.... it is very rare that I buy something......let's assume I never buy anything.....
Did Google make $?
if i do buy something online i go directly to the actual site 99% of the time and maybe 1% i search through google.
also, how do places like this website make $ off of the random advertisements? I personally have never clicked on one....... does the advertiser get a summary of how many people clicked, then how many of those actually bought something?
thanks

It depends on the companies involved, but suffice it to say that each time you click on a sponsored link or banner advertisement, the click is counted in a tally. The logs include things like the site that referred you to the page with the ad, where you went after you clicked the link, etc.
Potentially it could be set up to cross reference whether you also placed an order.
Most ads are paid "per click"

The more detailed your search, the more the businesses pay when you click their link in the google search. Some businesses pay over $5 per click depending on the competition. Than the next guy down the street wants his business to be on top so he pays $5.01 and then it goes back and forth in a bidding war.
In Googles case, when you search for something, which millions of people do every hour probably, you will notice at the top they have sponsored links, if you click on that link, google charges the client., they also have a window on the left side as well with the same sponsored ads.
This I imagine is a good chunk of their income. Being on the otherside, it works like this. I have a website that I want to advertise, so I go to Google adwords, and list my keywords, and say I will pay up to $.35 a click. When people click on my link, I get traffic and I pay for it.
It does work though, but it really adds up fast. For the average website it can easily be from 10-100 bucks a day. You set your limit.
Personal websites work in a similar way, you can have google place adds on your site, and you get paid a percentage of the value of that click. So effectivly, google has expanded their ad method to thousands and thousands of sites, and make money on each of those clicks as well.
Then they also have Pay per view, which gives you a small for every thousand views a banner recieves, whether you click on it or not.
At the bottom of google, there's a link to adsense, click on it if you're curious.

Those links on the right and at the top are sponsored links, meaning everytime someone clicks on the link Google gets anywhere from $0.10 to $10.00--depending on what the product/service is. Ex: someone selling gum usually bids $0.10 and someone bidding for legal services representing mesothelioma victims bid $10.00 since they stand to make thousands if not millions off of a potential client.
I am as amazed as you are that Google actually makes money this way as I never click on those links, and I'd be surprised if anyone else did.
