there are various crash diets i can teach you, but they will seriously harm your health in the long run (i've tried many of them), and once you stop, you gain those weight back.

you know how to lose weight, you just don't want to do the work (not many people do). how do the stars look so great? my wife's boss lives in an apartment that also houses a former playmate, and she spents HALF her day in the gym, think about it. i gripe when i jog 1.5 miles (severe back pain from running), or do 40 minutes of eliptical machine (very good!) or an hour of mixed weights and cardio - and i've been doing this for the past 5 months at least 3 days a week, it's helped me with my energy and general health, but i've stabilized at 196~200, and i've come to grips with that knowing that i'd probably never be 168, 31" waist ever again (see my picture from 4 years ago), but i also know that i'd die quite a few years earlier if i kept up what i did to keep thin at the time.

good luck, and the most important thing is determination.

Eat lots of fruit, have regular exercise and drink a lot of water.

The important thing is to change your way of life or you will have a situation where your weight is going up and down like a yoyo, that's damaging to your health also.

Good luck, it's not an easy task (I should know).

Everyone here has helpful ideas, but it's all about discipline. The discipline to work out when you do not want to workout. The discipline to spend the 20 minutes making dinner instead of running to the local fast food restaurant five minutes away.

My advice for working out is to first, develop a pattern. For the first couple of weeks do some sort of repetition. For example, I go to work, and when I come home, the first thing I do is work out. I change clothes and then work out. I don't sit on my couch, I don't make some food, etc. I get home, and I work out. That helps me get it started and keep with it.

Next, the diet. People think that high fat food are the main culprits in making people fat. To a point, that's true, but it's the carbs that kill most people. I'm not saying take on a Atkin's type diet, but limit your carb intake. Eat ALL your carbs before lunch if possible or seriously limit them after lunch. Eat TONS of protein. Protein releases a chemical that tells the body to burn stored fat, where carbs increase insulin levels telling the body to store fat. I would get a good whey protein supplement. Since I'm on the go in the morning, I buy Carnation instant breakfasts and add a scoop of of my protein supplement. Now my body is ready to go in the morning. Get plenty of chicken, fish, lean meat, green beans, broccoli. Stay away from whites. Bread, potatoes (french fries), sugary cereals.

One more thing, cheat once a week. Eat whatever you want one day a week. But you have to be great the other six days. The point about cheating is that it shocks your body, and your body by passes the crap, and just keeps functioning well. And it also helps you mentally to stay on your diet. We are all not perfect and allowing yourself one day will be good for you mentally.

Sorry, last thing, think about an aerobics type tape. They might not be "manly" but they will kick your ass. And mix cardio with weightlifting. Do both. Like people said, muscle boosts your metabolism and cardio will help erase the calories you have eaten in the day. Something that I have done, that works, is Power 90, it's an infomercial, I know, but if you have the discipline to do the workouts, and you eat right your body will change. If you want more info, go to http://www.beachbody.com. If you want to see everyday people, go to the message forums, and to the pictures forum. Check those out, you'll see everyday people like us get amazing results. It helped me, it will help you.

It also depends on what you want. Do you want to lose the mass or the fat? When people say they want to lose weight, they mean they want to lose all the fat that makes them look flabby. There is a fat percentage ratio for men and women. You may be overweight, but if your fat percentage is low, you won't look fat.

Among the advice above, the ones I sbuscribe to are:
1)cardio burns calorie
2)weight training builds muscle, raises metabolism and looks great
3)watch my food intake

I cut my intake by 100 calorie a day and burn about 300+, nothing serious. I am not losing weight fast, but I am seeing an improvement since I started a month plus ago. You have to be realistic and know that healthy weight loss takes time and is a lifestyle change.

I had lost a massive amount of weight (about 40 pounds now that I think about it) before I met my girlfriend, although I've since put back on the pounds. She likes a man with a proper beer gut (Bahahahah).

It was done over a three month period as was suggested by the now famous muscle media magazine.

From what I remember these are the important things.

exercise 6 times a week - 3 cardio and 3 weights sessions. and take one day off to recuperate and eat whatever you want!

mon+ wed+fri - make sure you do your cardio workouts in the morning before breakfast for about 30 minutes. Your body burns off 3 times more calories at that time than any other time in the day. don't just walk - run your freaking arse off but at a pace you can keep for 30 minutes.

tue+thu+sat - do your weights. different parts each time. e.g. biceps, calves on one day and chest and quads on another. trick is to not over exercise the similar muscle group. you'll get a lot more results this way.

with regard to nutrition - muscle media magazine recommends 6 - 7 little servings a day. i personally found this to be a little too much. so i had 4-5. now this is where it becomes difficult. have little portions (no bigger than your closed fist - maybe a little bigger). don't let yourself starve because you are more likely to binge if you do.

Protein is important - lots of chicken breasts (no other parts, yay!) no skin, etc. preferably boiled and some sauce on top for flavour.
egg whites are really good also - boil them and make sure you take out the yolks. don't listen to what the people at the egg council tell you.
put these items in a nice little salad and way you go.

another thing that i cooked up - drink 10 classes of water a day but never straight before or after a meal. (drink 30 minutes before a meal, for example) doing so gets you bloated, and you never want that feeling.

make sure you experiment with these foods. one of the main reasons i put my weight back on (although not as bad as before) is because i found these dishes to be stressful. letting myself go once a week wasn't enough - i wanted more taste!

oh, another thing - no alcohol for three months - none!

you can use supplements, but do a couple of months exercise first before using them. you don't NEED the EAS supplements as much as people at MM would tell you! it's all about youreating habit!

there are really great nutrition and workout books are videos out there, so make sure you read these, and also if you haven't worked out for a while (i.e. since highschool) go and see a doctor.

in the end, it's all about how 'desperate' you are. and your reasons for wanting to lose weight. get all your 'skinny' pictures from all those years ago - put them up on the fridge or something. all these things take a lot (even then it's an understatement) of dedication and hard work, but the sense of achievement you get is simply awesome. but i don't care now. my loving partner feeds me too well!

a LONG way of doing this is to simply cut down on your junk food and go for a walk every now and then. try to get your mind to adjust around your weight. thinking you are not overweight. eat good foods, don't start calorie-counting cos it is stupid and eats up too much time. you have better things to do (like posting on this board!).

all in all, enjoy the process. get yourself a similarly (or more) motivated training partner to work out with you, and try to make exercise fun. for example, using the computer only at designated times so that you can exercise more rather than sitting down looking at pictures of some guy and a potato up his arse.

good luck!

Atkins Diet and regular aerobic and weight training exercise.
Be strict/militant about the carbs. The weight will fall off in chunks.

realthing: this sounds like the Body for Life program http://www.bodyforlife.com

I did this program a year ago and was weighing 208. I now weigh 172

This is a very tough, regimented program that is basically made up of mostly what we know about dieting...don't eat too much and exercise regularly. The thing is, even after I stopped after the 12 week program I still continued to lose weight I started the plan again a few months ago and have since stopped completely 3 weeks ago and continue to lose weight again It really seems like everytime I stop working out I lose more weight

This is the complete opposite of what will happen when one does the fad diets. As soon as you stop doing it, the weight comes back with a vengence.

When I used to weigh around 185, I skip breakfast, eat lunch regularly, and late dinner. Each meal I eat a lot, especially dinner, so I couldn't sleep very well at night when my stomach works extra hard because I am lying down. So in the morning I just don't feel hungry at all.

Now I weigh around 165-170, I eat some breakfast, or skip it sometimes when the supply (milk, toast, cheese slices) in the fridge runs low. No lunch, drink some water at most - because work has been busy lately. By the time I get home I really need some food, and that's dinner for me around 6 or 7. Nothing else after 8-9, water or juice at the most unless if it's weekend. All started because of work got busy and skiping lunch became a habit. With early dinner - I could sleep better at night and get a little bit hungry in the morning for some quick breakfast.

I feel much better now and lost 20lbs. Good luck to you!
