Mingster, those satellite dishes are small enough to hide- maybe 24 inches across, 30 max.
Rue- yes I read your post and thank you. I know electronics about as much as I know brain surgery- so when you say transmit, I don't know how it accomplishes that. Just wanted to be absolutely sure. Hate to waste my $.

Mingster, you can buy any of the standalone Tivo units and then you can pick up a cheap USB ethernet adapter to connect it to your network. They support both wired and wireless connections. My recommendation would be to buy the smallest one and then upgrade the drive. I've done it to my Tivo and to two other ones and never had a problem. It's much cheaper to go that route than to buy a bigger tivo new.

Not exactly true. The roof is considered a shared space and not protected by the law. You need to have an area that is for your exclusive use, like a porch or balcony, to be protected under the law. Here's more information: http://www.fcc.gov/mb/facts/otard.html

The roof of a multiple dwelling unit is not fair game. But according to that page, if it's your own house, you can do what you like.

mingster, what sort of dwelling are you in?

Yeah, of course if you own a building you can do what you want. I was assuming he was living in an apt or townhome, though that may have been a bad assumption.

What restrctions are those? Landlord, Homeowners convenants etc can not prevent you from putting up a small satellite dish except in a few circumstances. See here: http://www.fcc.gov/cgb/satellite.html

edit: should have read the whole thread before "helping"
