ya, i sort of got off on a tangent there..... i would agree that a 1 week hospital stay is more $ than 6 months of most prescriptions.

They talk about how obese america is all the time on tv..... a fair amount of the medical problems are related to obesity......

how do you actually *make* people be healthier or less obese? I guess Frito Lay has enough people making sure that doesn't happen.

Just sucks that I have to pay higher insurance mostly for lazy assholes who don't even care about themselves enough to not eat like hogs.

Gastric bypass surgeries seem to be popular these days although it's my understanding that it's only indicated after all other efforts of losing weight have failed.

As for higher insurance, it's just the way of life. Just look at our car insurance. We have to pay higher rates everytime someone wrecks his/her car.
ya, that is probably $100k plus the operation to remove the exess skin that is hanging around after the weight loss. What a stupid world. Eat like a pig, do nothing to controll it, then spend a pile of $ that will effect everyone elses rates, to fix the problem (sort of)....and hope the piggy doesn't get fat again....

why bother exercising or eating smarter....

In the city at the little corner convience stores....all i see people buy are bags of chips. I am not sure why, but the adults and kids all buy lots and lots of chips....not sure what food could be worse for you other than straight lard. I don't eat potato chips more than about 2 times per year.

Take a look around at those who should exercise & eat smarter.

Do they look terribly motivated to you?

No..not at all. We had a Wellness Fair at work..... we inspired NO ONE to actually go to weight watchers or the smoking cessation classes.... even though they are both 100% reimbursed by our Health Insurance.

The very few interested people wanted the classes on company time and on site... gawd forbid they would put any effort into the process..... Then when they are dying they will be begging for help.... sorry...no soup for you.

My wife had her stomach removed due to a Stromal Tumor behind it, and adhered to it. It also had cancerous lesions on her liver and diaphragm. The doctor made her a small pouch out of the part of the intestine that was attached to the stomach. She had to eat about eight times a day until the pouch stretched out enough to hold more food. She still needs to snack between regular meals and it's been 5 years. People doing this for weight loss also need to remain on the regimen that is recommended by the doctor, otherwise they will go back to gaining weight. My wife was surprised that in the 5 years since her surgery that she had gained 20 pounds. She went on a weight watchers style diet and lost it in about 10 weeks.

The drugs that I take have some side effects, but to me I can deal with them to live. The ProGraf (anti-rejection drug that I will have to take for the rest of my life) gives me the shakes...it's especially noticeable when I am holding something small or thin, like a sheet of paper or a business card.
Right after I left the hospital I was taking so many drugs, that I had to take drugs to counter the adverse effects of another one. The worst drug initially was the Prednisone...I became a ranting lunatic at the slightest thing, I'd yell and scream at you if you looked at me wrong, then I'd cry and 5 minutes later everything was fine. I'm glad I'm not on that anymore. I had to take a stool softener, because one of the drugs would harden up my stool so that I was literally shitting bricks. When I got off of a sulfa based antibiotic a week later I got a case of the itchies that wouldn't stop, it felt like a million little fires all over me, my feet and hands were the worst.
Like I said earlier the only bad side effect I am having now is a slight shakyness and I can live with that.
I take it you've had an organ transplant?

I'm currently on dialysis for kidney failure waiting for an organ. I'm on Protonix (stomach acid), Neurontin (neuropathy), Renagel (prevents phosphorus buidup), Coumadin (same as rat poison, for stopping clots), and Methadone (yep, what heroin addicts use, for neuropathy pain).

I know I'm going to have to take an anti-rejection drug or drugs like Prograf forever. Also, I think I'll have to be on Prednisone, but I don't know how long. I know I've had it before and I gained 15 lbs in one day.

Yes, 30APR04 Liver transplant. Yeah, you'll be on ProGraf and most likely the Prednisone. One of the guys that comes to our liver class had a liver & kidney transplant about 10 years ago at the same time. He's still on prednisone but in a lower dose, I think he said about 10mg a day. He does have a rather large belly which may be from the Prednisone. Early on after the transplant your doses will be really high and you'll be taking a bunch of drugs like I was but you will be tapered off of them rather quickly. Once they reach a certain level you might be on only 1 or 2 drugs directly related to the transplant. Some of the others may be just because you need them, but not because of the transplant.
