Default How much do you REALLY car about your pets?

I used to have 3 dogs and 6 cats....after the divorce I ended up with 2 dogs (1 ran away....and no, it is not the ex-wife ) and 2 cats. I used to hate cats but I kind of got stuck w/2 of them because there was no place that would accept my ex with 6 freaking cats.

Anyway, one of them, Leeon, got sick last year...pretty bad pneumonia/cold/bronquitis kind of deal and we had to cough up $ 3,500 to save his ass. I wanted to put him to sleep but the ex (at the time we were ok) decided to give it our best shot. Bless her heart she was able to save him.

Now, he is SICK again, this time some sort of urinary infection and after 3 trips to the emmergency vet clinic and visits to the regular vet, treatment, blah, blah I have already coughed up $ 1,100 up to this morning.

My question is...how much is enough? I am really considering to put the poor little soul to sleep but I could not do it last night...I have been up all freaking night debating what to do....chances are he will have to have a surgery over the weekend and by the time all is done I will spend another $ 900......

OOWW!! One I love my dog dearly... But there comes to a point where you just can't anymore... I honestly say it's better if he doesn't 'suffer' anymore and just put him to sleep you'll def. save the $$ and the poor cat of any other illnesses.....

Have had to put down two dogs due to heart problems and cancer. Spent about $1000 and when there was no real improvement (especially the quality of life) I knew it was time. It is a hard decision to make as to when to call it "game over" but it has to be made. I always look at the quality of life that the pet has / had and make the decision based on that rather than the $'s spent.
It always seems that we imbue our pets with human characteristics but we must always remember (which is very hard) that they are pets. Most people would not have a problem with flushing a fish down the toilet or putting the pet hamster / gerbil into a shoe box for a back yard burial but when it comes to cats and dogs our perception changes as they seem to be a much larger part of the family.

I had to put down my dog recently (he was sixteen years old!). He was definitely my buddy, but he just wasn't having a good life any more. He couldn't control his bowels (ie, he was constantly crapping all over the house) and he was scared stiff whenever he did it (cause he knew he shouldn't have done it). Basically, he was just living scared so we ended up putting him down. It was way tough, since he was scared to the end (he hates going to the vet), but it was for the best. If they're young and have problems I can understand curing them, but when they're getting old it's time to let them go... Also, if they're just constantly sick, life isn't good for them either.

I would suggest letting your pet go - obviously the bucks are piling up and obviously it has some serious health issues. It took me FOUR MONTHS to decide to put mine down, but it is quite a relief (once you're over the grief) to not have to worry about them, or feel sorry for their pain and suffering.

You can always get another one - that's what I'm doing... My dog was totally my buddy, but he was pushing 90 (in human years) and it was just his time. The process is painless (quite peaceful, actually), so the animal won't be hurt. If you can keep them calm, they'll go down easy and happy...

Good luck on making a decision.

JonBoy has a point. How old is your cat? Is it overweight? It looks a bit chubby from the first photo. heehee
