How much do you REALLY car about your pets?

I totally agree with you but it's all about quality of life IMHO.
Our german shepherd is getting a bit wobbly on her back legs and for the first time she is looking old. I suspect in 12 months or so, we may have to ask ourselves some very very difficult questions. I like to think I know when she is happy and will be able to make the correct decision when the time comes. I secretly hope that she passes away quietly in her sleep before things get too bad but I doubt that would happen, life is never that simple.
I think that by asking this question you have already come to the realisation that maybe the time has come to allow Leon to rest.
Good luck with your choices, I am sure you will make the right decision.
Leon is 4....he is overall healthy except his stupid blader and "urethra"...(giggle every time I hear the vet say it as she has a speech disorder
). The doctors say he can go on forever if everything goes ok.
Only one surgery will be necessary. He has no stones in his bladder so the only surgery required will be to put it simply, "expanding" his urethra....this is pretty much going to eliminate half his er....er...male organ.
Poor guy, he has no balls and now they are going to chop half his shaft..but he would be able to pee well...hopefully.
I went over lunch to see him and I was going to have them put him to sleep.....I DID NOT DO IT AND I COULD NOT DO IT. He was staring at me with that little face like saying...."when are we going home?...this place sucks"....
He is a little chunky but not overweight....he is all fur. I had him "shaved" a couple of weeks ago..he lost 1.2 lbs...lol... (weight saving make cats faster too...
).

He didn't say things turned out well - he said he couldn't put the cat to sleep. There is still the matter of a surgery and the trauma of losing 1/2 a dick to contend with. Poor little guy will probably have to through lost kitty dick rehab and lost kitty dick counselling. Not to mention all the dating/relationship problems Leeon will have from now on.
But seriosly, Z06-KILLR, if you're attached to the cat and the doc thinks this will solve things to the point Leeon will have a long, happy life - do it. Pets are great.
P.S. - I know where you're coming from - I have 2 dogs and 2 cats. All but 1 of the dogs have been found and/or left here by now ex-girlfriends. And for a short time there was a 3rd dog I was taking care of for another ex-girlfriend (F*cking thing ate about $1,000.00 worth of my stuff in 6 wks, including my favorite recliner)
I should be getting pet support.

cats live a lot longer than dogs. cats can easily live past 20 if they eat right and excercise.
Putting an animal to sleep is one of the hardest decisions I ever had to make. 5 years ago my dog became very ill, constant vomiting. We took him to the vet and they told us we should put him to sleep because he was suffering. He was 7 years old at that point and the doctor said it was most likely cancer and he had max a couple of months to live. I just couldn't do it and decided to take him home to think it over. Well guess what Sleepy stopped vomiting, and lived 3 more years with me. We went for runs every day. He eventually passed away but I never regret not putting him to sleep when the doctor told me to. Hell the doctor was even amazed that the dog never seemed to suffer till the very end as he went for regular check-ups and appeared healthy and happy. Never lost his appetite and spent the days playing with my other dogs. I guess my point is it really depends on what you can live with. If the cat can be saved at 4 years old. It has many years left for you to enjoy with.

Reading people's replies here has been heart warming. I got my first dog a few months ago and she is my best friend. She will be turning two next month. I know it's too soon, but I have already started to think of life without her. I have seen how others handle the loss of their pets and it is devastating for them. I know it will be the same for me. I would do whatever I could to make her life as good as possible. However, as hard as it may be on me, I will have to make that terrible decision. I wish you well on yours.
I tell you what I was never a cat person...I gave into 1 of them when my wife at the time, allowed me to get into racing bikes again....then I bought another car so she had to get a 2nd cat....from there on, I have no idea what the heck happened but she managed to get 6 cats altogether (women are sneaky as hell).
On the divorce papers we signed 5 months ago, she was to keep ALL 6 cats. I got stuck with 2 of them and honestly I could care less then what happened to them....slowly but surely one gets attached, even to these little pets.
Pets are great companions and loyal as heck....I am going to take a couple of pics when I go and see him tonight and will post them up later on....thanks for the support you guys...
...and if some rich f
ck wants to send me $ 1000 to contribute to Leeon's get-well fund that of course would be really appreciated
