Are you saying that some companies run checks on you before you even get interviewed?

And this is critical because if they can do this MANY EMPLOYERS MIGHT ALWAYS JUST DUMP YOU FROM THE INTERVIEW PILE because you have been charged with a crime recently, thinking you are some kind of maniac.

Some do, yes.

I've got ten potential interviewies, check em out, oops eliminate four, only have to interview 6. Depends on the time and man power they have. Some pay a service to do this stuff for them. Probably not done with every job, but yo'd be surprised what they look into if your job has you in charge of anything financial.

I have to have a security clearance for military base access. Apparently the associated checks are quite expensive; I was told by my employer it costs to the tune of $10-$15k, though I have a hard time believing that number without further explanation. Regardless of the actual number, it gives the employer a large financial incentive to do a bit of filtering before making a hire that might not pass the check.

But most jobs have no such requirements, so this is an extreme case.

Yeah checks for security clearance are going to be far more intensive and expensive then for some run of the mill corporate position. I could potentially see that 10-15k depending on how far they go. They actually hire out or have internal investigators and vetting. My friend was applying for higher clearance with his defense contractor company and I had an investigator come and interview me at my apartment about him because I was listed as a reference. He was applying from his job on the other side of the country so it took some serious effort to track me down/coordinate with people here in NYC to get me.

My coworker had Top Secret clearance with the DOD years ago, which is only good for 5 years. Apparently every person listed on his history must be spoken with by phone at a minimum, including friends, people to verify everywhere you lived, every spouse, family members, lots and lots of others.

He had I think 6 ex-wives, and I know at least half of them never wanted to hear his name again in their lives, so I can only imagine how much of a PITA those investigations would have been!

Hey, that last part works! I always thought I'd find a teacher or homemaker since my mom never worked. I ended up marrying a medical student. Sugar mommas FTMFW!
(The engineering degree got the S since she's not nearly ready to practice, but still...)
