I am being sued....HELP!
Okay here is the problem I am going to keep this anonymous until the court date. The story:
I live in Maryland and I go to Virginia buy a NEW car a few months back.
Last week I am summoned to appear in court because the dealer wants me to pay the tax difference. In this time period I did not receive a call or any mail letting me know of this discrepancy. The question is WTF? I mean, your first course of action is to sue me for the money? Should I have to pay because they miscalculated the taxes? What do I say to the judge?
For those who will ask there is no phone number or anything on the summons or rather warrant as it is called on the paper. I can

seems crappy that they didn't contact you, but...... why not just pay? If it buy a car out of state, i have to pay the full 6% PA state sales tax to someone.... either the dealer where i bought it, or actually drive the $ down to the dept of transportion myself.
goodluck!
goodluck!
I did pay the taxes for MD (I have the paperwork) they are saying it was more than they thought, I guess, and I did not pay enough...
I would have paid if they had contacted me but the FIRST I heard of this is through this court date summons where I have to appear. I figure if I have to appear I am going fight this regardless....right?!?

i would just pay the $ and be done. Apparently they miscalculated it (humans make mistakes), so you would be out the $ if they had done it correctly...... what is there to fight?
it is stupid that they didn't try to contact you first!

be aware of your legal address, your dealer dosnt have this confused. keep in mind the worker at the dealer is a dum ass bush supporter so anything can be wrong here.
go to the state office where auto sales tax is paid, bring all the paper work from the dealer and DONT MENTION YOUR COURT DATE. have them determine the amount. it is quite possible they mis calculated one way or another. see if you can get something in writting as to the amount again DONT MENTION YOUR COURT DATE.
you have a court date and case number, call the court, see if you can get a stay, move the date out. they should immediatly grant you at least one extension, tell them you cant make the first date. also contact, talk to the da handling the case determine the process to determine over paid or under paid tax.
every state is different, you will mostlikely have to pay the tax, that is if you owe anything at all

You are correct, BUT I don't live in VA so I have to lose either a vacation day or pay to go to court. That is ridiculous. It is different if I were single I'd have to time to burn but I have a family of four and time is very essential.....
SO I drive 6 hours to court and probably get a hotel since the time is 8:30 am, waste gas to and back to pay for their mistake. Come on I know life is unfair but what about just a little justice...

reference the office where you register vehicles, in the state where you live. they should be familiar with the laws between the two states.
