You said you can't swim, but do you go in the water?

When you're in the water do you have fun?

Do you bounce around and play in the waves (in a semi float)?

If you said yes to all of those learning to swim will be a breeze.

Most of the time I'm in deep water I'm not actually swimming. I'm treading water, hanging onto the sides of boats, floats, girls or whatever. You use the swimming to get from point A to point B then you hang out.

As others have said, look into lessons at your local pool, or if you are so inclined, you can hire a personal coach. My sister, who is in her late 30s and didn't know how to swim as of this past July (2009), hired a coach and a few weeks ago, completed her first mini-triathlon. In just a few months, she went from not knowing how to swim, to swimming 1,000 meters in practice (swimming laps), to swimming 400 meters in open water (i.e., the ocean) for the triathlon. I was really impressed b/c even though I've known how to swim for a while, I'm only a weak to average swimmer, and now she can swim circles around me.

Welllllllll your sister sounds like a bitch. I'm kidding, I really am

Used to drive me nuts growing when any time I'd do something, my brother would step in with no experience and do it 5 times better. I calmly got up many-a-time and walked away in silent anger.

I'm embarrassed to say that I'm a grown man who doesn't know how to swim. How hard is it to learn and how long would it take to comfortably swim by myself in deep waters? And where? Suggestions and answers will be appreciated.

Oh, anyone else here doesn't know how to swim too?

Some of you guys are real dicks.

To the OP: Don't worry, go to your local YMCA and inquire about swim lessons. Knowing how to swim makes being at the beach so much better... and a LOT safer. Everyone should know how to keep themselves afloat for hours with minimal effort.

MikeyCB: seriously, bro, you need to take a few lessons and learn the form on a few strokes. It sounds like you can keep yourself afloat but if you feel you are a weak swimmer, you need to improve that. I've seen pictures of you guys on the boat partying. You could have fallen off that boat in the dark and had no one notice for a long long time.

Wow, so many Nazis and KKKs in here! Just because I can't swim, you automatically assume I was black or colored? FYI, I'm not.

I can tread water for about a couple minutes, then would sink.

Wow! That's great for her. How much did a coach cost her? I'll look into swimming lessons at the Y.

Thanks for all the serious answers!
