Default I have a dream. Is it crazy?

I took the S out for a drive yesterday. It's always fun but some of my focus was drawn away from the fun of it all, toward potential police car hiding spots. I got a ticket recently and wasn't in the mood to get a second one.

Stupid civilized society and its stupid laws

Anyhow, when I returned home, the thought of auto-crosses in parking lots crossed my mind and I pondered getting into that. Then, I recalled that land is ridiculously cheap here in Central Texas. Then, I grabbed some lunch and took a nap. Then, I started thinking how much it would cost to build my own scale model race track.

This would be the plan:
1) Buy about an acre of land
2) Either pave a big rectangle of it and rearrange cones depending on my mood or pave it in the following shape--whichever ends up being cheaper

3) Buy one or more go-karts
4) ???
5) Sell the land, track, and karts, two years down the line at not too much of a loss.

Okay, your thoughts?

I like, but what's stopping you from making it full-size and making a little profit from it.
Sell your house, build a new one on this new piece of property, make a driveway out of a racetrack...or a racetrack out of a driveway. Think insurance waver and $50-$75 per half-day.

Paving is the killer expense.

If you are going to run karts you will need more than an acre. Our newest and best kart track in SoCal is on about 20 acres and is slightly over 1 mile in length. The land was not too bad as it is out in the boonies but the paving is the killer. I beleive the Morans spent in the neighborhood of $1.7 million to get it operational. You could obviously do it on a smaller scale but I think you would need at least 10 acres to have a fun kart track. Plus a good used TaG kart will run you about $3500 and a premium TaG kart about $6500. For a shifter add about $2000 to both those numbers.

I would think making the mini-Sepang raceway would be cheaper than paving a big rectangle, though obviously it's far less versatile. I bet you could figure out how much space you'd need without too much trouble. If you can find dimensions of the real track, then scale it down by go-kiart-to-race-car dimensions (or something similar) and see what that gets you. A construction/paving company could probably give you a reasonable estimate based on that.

Good luck! If it pans out, we may have to have s2k gatherings at your house .
