no thanks, i'll just keep torrenting stuff i want since is free and convienent.
Yes, most artists make their money on the road. However, as more artists move to producing their stuff and moving to direct distribution (over the webz), the more piracy affects them.
With iTunes, CDBaby, Amazon, and a myriad of other websites coming online, how is it NOT convenient to obtain media legally?

edit: fun update: i also download songs for rockband onto my ps3 using a buddies account and vice versa.
Technology has surpassed the music industry in its current state.
The business model of the music industry WILL HAVE TO CHANGE if they want to be a viable part of the future
the technology of "making music" as far as recording and producing has plateaued a bit, so the music producers and distributors should shift their priorities to signing artists to contracts that support and take larger profits from the touring and appearing.
Pay the artists less to produce the music, spend less on distributing music to retail consumers and manipulate the markets that still offer traditional revenue streams...like radio rotation etc
There is still going to have to be a leveling that will have to take place. they simply cant tack on another 50.00 to a concert ticket that is already 100.00 or more because the people wont pay it. they will have to start from the ground up and negotiate their profit directly with the artists
OR
The power will simply shift away from the big record companies and simply become the full domain of the artist. The cost of producing quality music is so low, a simple business loan (in the proper hands) can take you all the way to superstardom.
The smart record company will see this and turn themselves into investors, backing the large costs of touring and marketing. Instead of seeking out talent and trying to develop the artist and then accruing the costs of production and distribution, they will let the ambitious make their music and release it virally and then offer their pockets and services for a decent share of the touring and appearances.
Recorded media produced for retail profit is essentially dead. Once one copy is bought the whole world can basically have it at will. The landscape will have to change and it already has to some degree.

theft and copyright violations are two very different things. one is criminal, the other is civil.
the crdcz03 dude, like many others in our culture, simply doesn't have any fear of getting caught and sued for his copyright violations. and to be honest, even if he was unable to pirate any of that crap, do you think he'd actually buy it? he may be a leech, but taking $ out of someone's pocket is not what he's doin...
and since it almost sounds like i'm defending this... i'm not... i'm just saying it isn't theft.

^ Maybe you're right as far as the "legalese" is concerned, but I disagree when you say he's not taking $ out of someone's pocket. He is in possession of and utilizing something without paying for it. To me, that's the equivalent of theft. It's the same as if you steal a CD from a store, as far as I'm concerned. Sure, there may be no theft of physical material, but he's still stealing something that someone else had to spend money to produce & distribute.
steal cd from store - cd can't be sold to someone else, therefore loss of $ spent on the cd
copy mp3 from friend - no loss of $, except in the theoretical "if you bought it instead" sense
that is the reason they are different legally as well as in the minds of those who commit these types of crimes. again i'm just arguing for the sake of arguing here, but i believe there is a substantial difference.
to kind of put things in perspective ... personally I would be much more harsh if i found my son or daughter doing the former as opposed to the latter .... see my point?

i had something typed out but around that time is when the website stopped loading for like an hour lol.
so ill just say this, you might as well just stop arguing about it b/c its not going to change anything. in fact, next time i go to best buy and see the huge selection of cd's im going to laugh to myself and think about this thread.
it makes no sense to buy a cd that has MAYBE 3 decent songs on it out of 15-20. instead i can download a few albums, delete the crappy songs and make one cd full of good songs. thus i have taken money out of the music industry and the blank cd making company and single handedly further digging a hole in the USA's economy.
