Omar rejects Bush's offer

ISLAMABAD: Taliban leader Mulla Mohammad Omar on Saturday rejected US President George W Bush's offer of a "second chance" to end US air strikes by handing over Osama bin Laden, the Afghan Islamic Press reported.

The news agency quoted Omar as saying the hunt for Osama was just a pretext for war against Islam. "The Americans have attacked Afghanistan without any proof to cover up the failure of its intelligence agencies. It is finding a pretext to finish an Islamic country," the news agency quoted Omar as saying in a statement.

The statement was reportedly released in the Taliban's southern stronghold of Kandahar, the subject of intensive US air strikes since October 7. "We do not have any extradition treaty with America under which we can hand over the suspected people," Omar said.

"Our sin is that we have enforced Islamic laws in the country. We have given shelter to an innocent and shelter-less Muslim who is not even allowed to spend an hour in any other country."

He called on the world's Muslims to unite against the United States. "Does your faith permit you to tolerate this barbarism of the United States against Muslims? Does your faith allow you to sit silently and support Americans?" Omar asked.

He reiterated that the Afghans had fought off British and Soviet invasions and were not afraid of conflict with a super power. "Everyone knows that the Soviets and British had been defeated in Afghanistan and this will be the fate of the Americans," he said.

I particularly like the fourth UNBIASED paragraph. Gee, us Americans have so much to learn about perspective.

Now, we're being told by persons living in countries that have yet to experience first hand, the most recent terroristic BULLSHIT to read papers from Pakistan and Indonesia for a better perspective.

Am I the only one that thinks the world is totally ****ED UP?????
I don't deny the reality of the situation. I merely advocate obtaining information from a variety of sources to see what is happening in the world and try to come to your own conclusions instead of taking it as gospel from a single source. It's a basic tenet learned in most Universities. I'm sorry if you are offended by that

And yes... I agree, this world is totally f****d up.

Uh....we do have libraries, cable and internet access. I hardly believe Americans are incapable of or lack the inclination to access news worldwide. We are an entertainment driven society. We know spin. We also know how to access outside info. Surprisingly enough, some of our media do as well.

I would have agreed with you if you had named countries with a free press. You suggested Pakistan, Indonesia and India; if I wanted to make your point about multiple sources of information, I would have suggested France (whose elite generally despises everything American), Russia (they ride the fence between ally and enemy), and possibly a Scandinavian paper (there dream is neutrality in every dispute).

During WWII would you have suggested reading the Berlin Times for 'balanced perspective'?

Another 2.65 cents,

Tanq... I'm not saying that those are the only papers to read by any means. I read them because I wouldn't have found articles like this http://www.timesofindia.com/articleshow.as...t_ID=1897959946 otherwise.

It was just a general statement that one should be widely read and draw their own conclusions. (I may be guilty of going off topic but I understood Greg's original post to be more about the effect of the media than Anthrax specifically).

Indonesia is one of our nearest neighbours so what happens there is fairly relevant to us.

Pueo... I truly wish everybody had access to those mediums In Australia 1/3 of the population have these facilities. Obviously this board for the most part is representative of people with a good education, a keen intellect and the neccessary tools at their disposal to obtain information. I'm in no way suggesting we can't differentiate but there are many folk out there (worldwide) less priviledged than ourselves who are unfortunately influenced to a large degree by the media.

I'm going to leave this conversation here as it is understandably highly emotive. There's enough tension in the world. I come to the board to relax

Peace.

I work in post offices across the country installing flat sorters as a field engineer. For the past few days there have been meetings about antrax, and while there are some precations taken, it is still a scary senario. Again, only time will tell.

Ever since Wolfowitz said we needed to kill Saddam, I knew that he knew something that we don't know. I am beginning to form an impression that Iraq is sending us these Anthrax envelopes, and that Saddam's elimination is crucial to the solution.

This really hasn't got much to do with balance of perspective. Greg, I think like you on this issue, probably a single whack job in a Montana out-house.
