Honestly I don't like crockpots, I have a couple (people keep buying them for me!!) and I use them once a year if that. What got Evan and I in the kitchen is Gordon Ramsay's Fast Food: Recipes from the F Word. This book is awesome!!! Really yummy food that is easy and quick to make. I've made stuff from this book that I would never imagine I could make. The directions are really easy to follow and there are pictures of the food! A lot of the dishes can take only 15 minutes to make.
Here's a link to Powell's book store that has a good description of the book.

If you need the extreme basics, I would recommend picking up a kids cook book. It's easy to understand and has pictures .

If I don't know how to cook something I always google it or look on eHow.com.
I also like going on http://www.wholefoodsmarket.com/recipes/ , they have recipes organized by budget, ingredient, kids, Quick & Easy, etc.

Get a copy of Cooking for Dummies and some cookware and dive in.

It's quite easy if you can follow simple directions.

I'm blessed by having married an excellent cook. So's she.
+1 more for Cooking For Dummies.

After you master those techniques, you can start going through other cookbooks unafraid.

Move downtown.

We have over a dozen restaurants within a mile, and almost half of them are healthy (Whole foods makes great sandwiches). It takes less time to go for a brief walk and get dinner together than cook.

I guess being young with no kids makes that a lot easier...

Not sure what the restaurants are like in your area, but around here even if you pick healthy choices off their menus, you're talking 650+ calories and easily spend 12 bucks a head,so you can figure $8-$12 per meal x 3, plus $3-$4 for in-between,Thats easily $700+ a month....Whoa!! thats almost my rent payment.

I can eat for less than $7 a day and manage over 2k calories.

Cooking yourself will always be the best option...unless your lazy and don't mind spending the money.

check out www.allrecipes.com. It's a great site, you can even save recipes you like to your "recipe box," get emails everyday for new recipes, or highly rated ones, or even do advanced searches for recipes for what ingredients you have on hand. It's all FREE too.

Just make sure to check out the recipe ratings, and reviews, as most of these recipes are submitted and reviewed by the general public.
