I am going to buy my first handgun this week. I own several other rifles/shotguns, but no handguns. I am buying with the mindset that I MAY never buy another hangun again(however doubtful that is), because it is my belief that handguns sales will probably be outlawed sometime in the near future, especially living in CA. So I want a good combination of reliablility, accuracy, stopping power, size, and overall price. This is also something I don't want to feel bad about bringing down to the range on a fairly regular basis (obviously nothing competative). I have decided on something .40 caliber. Only other criteria is that I would prefere to keep the overall length under 7" and I am not intrested in revolvers.
The three that I am most closely considering are
Glock 23
Glock 27
H&K USP-Compact .40 S+W (a little more expensive, worth it?)

If there is a model I have overlooked that I shouldn't have let me know! Thanks in advance.

I am not intrested in a gun conrol debate.

PS- If you know, what would be acceptable prices for each?

I'd go for a Sig - best out of the box (balance/precision) handguns I've ever owned.

Love HKs, but on the expensive side.

Love Glocks, but needs some getting used to on the ergonomics.

Not the prettiest, but a Glock 23 is ultra-reliable, accurate, compact, easy to shoot, and the .40 S&W is IMHO the ideal load.
