Benz and BMW are out because of price...

I need a manual tranny, reasnoably large wagon for the wife. She won't drive a Ute, and has an aversion to any domestic cars.

That leaves us with:
Subaru (she doesn't like the Forrester or Legacy and the Imprezza line is too small )

Volvo - love to find a clean V70R....

Volkswagen - Passat wgon might work, but would have to be a new car under lease for reliability sake.

...?????

What would you do?

What about an Audi A4 or A6 Avant or All Country? Audi used to have fairly good lease packages where all normal maintenance was included.

The Volkswagen Passat wagon is nice, as is the new Jetta wagon which is new for this year....coming soon to a dealer new you.

I think the Saturn LS wagon (LW?) is nice looking. The Subie Legacy Outback LL Bean version with the 3.0 six-cylinder engine is nice, but pricey at over $30K.

The Volvo V70 is a sweet ride for a wagon, but expensive also

This is easy. Audi S4 Avant, 6speed, 250hp, 4wd, and it looks awesome.

I know your wife does not like Subarus, but if she has any desire for world-class performance, you should try to persuade her to consider the upcoming Subaru WRX--it will have a wagon option. I think we may see a lot of these as a complement to the S2000.

I was going to recommend the Subaru, before you mentioned size. I know a guy who has the Volvo and he loves it. Its a pretty sharp looking car as well.
Unfortunatly my knowledge of Wagons is a little lacking

I second the S4 Avant... that'd be my first choice living in the US without the RS4.

In Yellow of course!!!

Great Utility Wagon: Subaru Outback. Low cost (easily purchased for a few hundred over invoice, $22k). Goes anywhere, very reliable. We are on our third.

Great Sport Wagon: Audi A4 Avant 1.8T. Great performance when tuned properly (read chip and exhaust). Relatively small. The new 325Xi can also be had for a few $$$ more than the A4. The WRX wagon is also a contender here, much smaller, but also lower priced. Oh, and really ugly too

Great in-between wagon: Passat 1.8T. Downside is no all-wheel drive, a major advantage in Colorado.

Opulent wagons: Mercedes E-class, BMW 330XI, Audi Allroad.
All nice, but way to much money for a station wagon, IMHO.

Wagons I personally wouldn't consider: Volvo, anything US built, Saab wagons.
