Default illegal paytv

what do u guys in the usa know about the illegal pay tv/ cable setups? are there big penalties for these things and is it easy to get away with, anyone want to mention details like how they work
as far as i know, in oz, if u have a dish, decoder box and decoder chip/card then u r set to receive all channels without anything more to pay. the card sometimes gets scrambled but it is easily recoded.
i am interested because pay tv is only about 5 odd years old here but i assume it has been going on longer in the US

cable and satellite (the little dishes, not the big ones) is big money here - some of the companies have really cracked down on it. Prior to digital cable, however, it was pretty easy - $150 or so got you a set-top box and decoder, the price went up to $300 or $400 if you wanted more features.

The new satellite boxes are a bit harder and require about $500 of hardware and a "smart" card. The card tricks the box into thinking it got an "ok" from the billing software. The internal software is remotely updateable and the satellite companys are working at blocking the smart cards by updating the software. The cards are called smart because they're reprogramable, so it's only a matter of time before you're back in business.

Not sure what can be done with digital cable, since they don't use a card for billing.

Someone told me that if you have more than one receiver, you can give one (or more) to a friend(s), have them install a dish on their roof, and they are "in business" for only the cost of the dish and receiver. Split the monthly bill between a few people and it's really cheap!
I don't have satellite TV though!

Do a search on google for 'cable descrambler' or 'DSS descrambler' and you'll find a whole slew of places... used to be, you had to have the right 'friends'.

I think that as long as only one receiver was connected to a phone line it would work!

The guy that told me this install these systems.

A normal DSS system doesn't work if it's not hooked up to the phone line as far as I know. He must be implying the use of a programmable smart card.

My friend has a black box and descrambles payper view channels. I think he also gets cable for free.

He has Cox Cable and they haven't caught him yet. He's had it for 3 years I think.

I'll try to get the type of box he has.
