Default I'm Officially A Consultant Now

Last February I left Northrop Grumman to start me own project management / risk management consulting company. Although I have been working quite hard since then, things have been going extremely slowly.

That all changed on Monday.

On Monday I found myself in Pascagoula, MS to begin two days of training at Northrop Grumman's Ship Systems division - that's right, my old company; I was teaching a beginning course in @RISK for Project, a Monte Carlo simulation package that lets you analyze uncertainty in your schedule.

They want me to come back to teach an advanced course, and have expressed interest in having me do some consulting on particular projects.

This is so cool!

On Wednesday I interviewed at the Extension school of UCI to teach Risk Management, and they're also interested in having me help develop a CFA review course as well.

Finally, this thing is starting to move.

Now I'm looking forward to getting enough business to pay off the second mortgage we took out when I had no cash flow.

If all goes well, I'll have an M.S. in Industrial/Organizational Psychology as of May '05. Will you be hiring then?

congratulations Magician on the big step forward your consulting company has made. it takes real guts and self-confidence-- and a significant personal financial risk-- to leave an established position at a large and well-respected company to start your own. it speaks volumes as to your expertise and respect in your field-of-endeavour that your former employer has reached out to you in this capacity.

Great news!! I know of quite a few people who have gone into consulting and have ended up working for their old company in that role. One of my clients was retired from Ford and worked as a consultant after his retirement from them, gets his pension plus gets his fees as consultant...Nice!!

Good luck with your endeavors!

I started a company called Environmental Resources Group (smart). After building it up to 35 people, I sold it to Jacobs Engineering (semi-smart), structuring the purchase agreement such that I had to stay on five years to get my money out of the deal (dumb). I ended up staying nine years (really dumb) and grew to hate it. Then I founded my current firm, Athanor Environmental Services (really smart) almost 15 years ago and have been happy as hell since.

Good luck. I consulted on a few research projects after I left my last job. The cool thing is they look at you in a totally different light than when they employed you.

Just for fun.
