I get your point about the blonde/blue eyed comparison (although there are ethnic Indians who have blue eyes!), but your point of "Indians aren't Asian because they don't look like all other Asians" isn't true.

Just to reiterate, my point is that just because ethnic Indians don't look like typical Japanese or Koreans doesn't mean that they aren't Asians.

...Thank you; exactly what I meant to say.

BTW, you know another thing that's kind of burning my britches? What do people think when they describe Indians as "....the one's from India"? Where else are Indians from? Can someone really think this one out?

Indians are from India, then were are American Indians from? They aren't from India....so are they really Indians? Obviously not, they are Native Americans that were labelled as Indians because some European mistook his voyage route and thought he had landed in India. Therefore the Indians from America are NOT Indians, they are Native Americans!

I think people are still focusing too much on the word "Asian" and not thinking about what it really stands for. I agree with 94NSX, he explained well in great detail for those of you that are more politically correct type people.

One caveat, oriental is not such a nice PC term. Not that I care, but some might have a fit over it.

I realize that "oriental" might be an offensive term but for the sake of making a clear argument, I had to use it. No offense meant.

Remembering back to my anthro class, and the 1950s-era encyclopedias my dad picked up at a garage sale and I used to read while sitting on the can, based on physiological traits, there are three major races: Caucasoid, Mongoloid, and Negroid. The races can be further subgrouped.. check google.

Because people tend to walk and paddle about, you'll find a variety of races in any particular place.

The north Indians I work with claim to be caucasoid. I'd agree... lighten their skin up and they'll look like most "white" caucasoids.

For those who take offense to the term oriental being used to describe persons native to Asia, the excerpt below has an interesting point that similar usage of Eurocentric terms is not as commonly objectionable.

i agree - not because it's not technically correct, but historically (by chinese imperial documents) indians have always been viewed as a different race, which explains the diplomatic relationships in the past few thousand years between china and india...

on the other hand, i understand that past and current chinese governments regard anyone outside of the china/japan/korea region to be completely different "asians" as well, which can also be used to explain the general and historical views chinese have on southeast asians...

you know, the more i think about this, the more i realize ancient chinese are a bunch of biggots...i mean, if you were of southeast asian background and you read some of the historical imperial texts, you'd be royally pissed at what that region was generally regarded as
