Injured Horse
On Saturday and Sunday my wife and I went riding. Every time we go out and every time we come back I check Khaleel's legs to make sure that they're looking and feeling OK. On Sunday I checked his injured tendon, then his other front tendon, then the injured one again.
All of the swelling is gone. I was told that he may have a small bump that will never go away, but I cannot feel any difference between his injured tendon and the uninjured one.
On Monday I talked with our trainer and she said the same thing: the injured leg is back to where it was before this all happened.
Next Sunday it will be one year.
By the way, Valentine's leg problems (see my original post) are all gone as well. What a blessing it is to have a sharp-eyed trainer who knows how to spot injuries early and how to heal horses, and her husband who knows how to shoe them properly!
Merry Christmas, all!

One year today.
We went riding for about one-and-a-half hours this morning, including some cantering and galloping over some pretty rough terrain. When we got back to the barn I checked his legs and he's in perfect condition.
Happy anniversary!

Khaleel's angels - and mine as well - were working overtime yesterday. (You're aware that horses' angels look like Pegasus, right?)
A group of four of us were trotting along a local trail that we've ridden dozens of times. Everything was going fine, then Khaleel stumbled on his left foreleg; you guessed it: the one he injured two-and-a-half years ago. I tried to pull his head up, but he stumbled again and down he went: face-first into the dirt.
As best I can make out he fell on his left side, then his body did a somersault, while his head stayed on the ground. He landed on his right side - and on my right leg, with my foot still in the stirrup - with his neck bent completely to the right and his head pinned underneath his right shoulder. I tried to pull my leg out from under him and he didn't move a muscle. Not a twitch.
I honestly thought that he had broken his neck and that I had 900 pounds of dead horse lying on my leg.
I finally pulled my leg free, ran around to his forelegs and tried to roll him over; he still wasn't moving a bit. My wife had run back to us, grabbed his hind legs, and both of us finally managed to roll Khaleel over onto his left side. In the meantime, one of the other ladies took off on her horse to get our trainer. Khaleel shook his head, scrambled to his feet, and ran off after the other horse.
One moment he's dead, the next he's alive again. I still cannot believe it.
The upshot is that he has a small cut over his left eye, some scrapes, quite a few sore muscles I'm sure, some swelling, and that appears to be it. We'll know in a couple more days if there's anything more serious, but the way he's moving it looks like no broken bones and no injured ligaments / tendons. What a blessing.
I came out of it without a scratch. A 900-pound horse took me head-first into the dirt and landed on my leg and I don't have a scratch to show for it. Nothing.
If you don't believe in miracles, come visit me in Yorba Linda, CA and I'll introduce you to Khaleel.

Glad to hear about your horse and yourself making out of that incident alive...I have a soft spot in my heart for animals and hate to see anything happen to them...I hope you have many many more years of riding out of your good friend.
