I highly recommend trillian, but for computer "know nothings" it is a bit hard to set up. I had to set up my sisters and my friends. It is a thousand times better than AOLIM simply because if you dont like it you can remove it, try doing that to AIM.

NOTE: Uninstalling AIM still keeps about 5 or 6 files on your computer, you have to manually delete these. Also you get tons of goodies with AIM like 10563489 free hours of AOL, just what I wanted!!!!

NOTE 2.0: "know nothings" are people who know nothing about computers.

where did Trillian originate from? was it made for windows in the begining or did it have roots with linix?

I got it for free early on cause I fixed a few bugs for em

I'm not sure about the upgrade path, I think you can just install pro and then remove the free version. You won't lose buddy lists because they are stored on the servers, but double check on that depending on which IM service you use (AOL, MSN, Yahoo, etc). The UI is a lot nicer in pro. The only thing I have against Trillian is that it's a bit bloated. I'm looking for nice, quick, small, open-source stuff, but there isn't much out there. Guess it's just a geek thing though, heh.

It's been windows only forever. There was talk about a linux port a year or two ago, but I don't know how far they've gone with that. They want to make $$, and it's much harder to convince linux geeks to buy an IM program when they've already got a few good (but, IMO not better than Trillian) open-source clients.

Been using Trillian for long time.

You have to buy the Pro version.

v2.0 ... It's well worth it.

Some of the plug-ins (like World Time) are pretty handy for me too.
