People are spot on about the iPhone being bad with enterprise functions. I set up a push IMAP e-mail account and my battery life went to 1/2 of what it normally is. I still like the phone more than my previous Blackberries though.
On upgrade eligibility:
Normally, if the bill on your main line is greater than $100 your 2 year contract entitles you to a full upgrade at the 1 year mark. Combine this with AT&T taking 6 months off and you'll be eligible for the upgrade pricing if you purchased > 6 months ago. For users with a bill under $100, the 24 months can become 20 months or 18 months, (not including the -6 months they just gave) I forget which.
For example: I purchased the 3gs on launch, my upgrade eligibility was 06/20/10, it changed to eligible now about 2 days ago.
One thing the iPhone does have as an advantage is resale value. It took a day to eBay my beat up 1 year old 3GS for $500. It's enough to pay for the upgrade and more. Although I'm locked for another year, AT&T service is decent where I am so I doubt I'd be switching providers anyways.

Iphone looks like a decent phone, and everything about it and the new OS has been pretty much known to the public for the past few months. There were no surprises in this key note for apple or anything really worth bringing up.
The iphone 4 is going to be a good phone, but what it is not going to be is leaps and bounds better than its competition that is already out. You can easily argue that the EVO is a better phone. You could probably argue that the Iphone is better in some aspects. Regardless, Apple's iphone has never been in this position in the past. Looking back as little as last year, apple has always had the best hardware bar none, with other manufacturers playing catchup. That is not the case this year and around xmas time when the dual core android phones comes out the Iphone4 will look like a Motorolla Razr in comparison.
That is why many "tech" people are not excited for this phone. Sure, the apple people who only buy apple sight unseen will be; and this phone WILL be good for people who just wants a smart phone and doesn't want to mess around with it too much. But the best apple phone ever released simply does not have enough "Magical goodness" to keep pace with the android onslaught that will be coming its way every 2-3 months.
Oh, and the biggest difference between the Iphone, (Evo, droid, incredible, ect...) is that it does not play flash, which is running very nicely on those phones listed above.

I got the 3G at launch 2 years ago, I was able to get the 3GS at launch last year with the upgrade eligibility you referenced. I checked my upgrade today and yday and it's listed for February 2011.
I may have to call in and check on that, last year they just made the upgrade announcement a couple of days after pre-order hopefully they do the same.
The only thing that sucks is giving up my unlimited data for capped data. When Netflix is available I can see a lot of people burning throuhg 2gb quickly.
My 3GS is jailbroken with tethering so data adds up real fast!
