Default iphone

So I just got a free iphone (1st gen, darn) from my brother in law and I had a few questions. I'm in a contract with verizon so I can't exactly switch without paying a hefty sum. Is there a way to use the iphone with all its amenities just without the phone aspect (calling/txting/etc)? I'm willing to pay monthly (for internet, apps and such) I honestly just wanna use it just like an ipod that I can bring anywhere with internet access without the need for wifi...

I've heard of a few people who got their new carrier to pay for the "early termination fee" from the old carrier. Ask your new carrier to cover the early termination fee or you'll walk out - they usually offer to pay it for you.

Yes.

(Edit - the above is for wifi/iPod Touch type usage. There is no officially supported way to use 3G for data but not for voice. They come hand-in-hand for the most part.)

never had verizon, but if they require the usage of sim cards, find someone who can unlock the iphone and insert your sim card in there... that is unless you love your current phone

the OP is talking about just using it as an iPod touch, no phone service.

OP - I think you'll only be able to use internet via wifi, unless there's an app for that (using cell signal with no service, i dont think you can just buy data from a carrier).

He still wants internet like the iphone. You can buy data from a carrier, but not with the iphone. They sell the 3G connect cards for laptops, new netbooks with built-in connectivity, and soon the mifi (and other similar devices). They probably won't offer it on the iphone because it's got skype to workaround the phone part.

What you need is ZiPhone. Do a full clean install/restore with the latest firmware. You can do everything using the ZiPhone app.

Well this would be a great idea if I had a sim card ... This is a brand new in box iphone so I wont have a simcard to put in. I could use my gf's old sim card but i heard iphones use a different sim card from the usual at&t phones
