January 28th, 1986...Challenger Disaster
Sitting in 9th grade biology. Teacher came in a told us what happened, we watched news coverage on TV the rest of the day.
One of the things that sticks with me is how bad infomation is during news coverage of disasters. I remember distinctly which ever network we were watching at the time talking about a report of an escape capsule of some sort parachuting to earth and waiting to see if there were survivors and don't think that kind of thing has ever been part of any space shuttle.
But I suppose the "Mr. Higgins" call to ABC during the OJ standoff is further proof that TV news people are still that gullible today.

I was in school, maybe 3rd grade? We were watching it on live broadcast, because we had been talking about the teacher on-board all week. Pretty weird.
For the Columbia... I was driving to get my S2000 dyno'd. The guy that lived across the hall from me at my apt complex called to tell me about it. He said he had heard a boom (sonic boom?) and turned on the news to see what might have been going on, and that's when he saw the report about the shuttle disintegrating. I'm not sure if he really heard something or not, but that's what he said. I didn't hear it even though I was driving top-down.

Stern Rules!
For the prior 4 years I had lived close enough to the space center to just step outside and watch the show in person. We had just moved and I was in training in a new job so luckily I wasn't there in person for the the first time in years.
That morning when we woke up my wife told me a very detailed dream she had about the shuttle blowing up shortly after lift off. The dream really had her freaked out. Seeing what looked almost like her dream play out on TV was tough for her.
It was a very sad day but those brave people died doing what they loved.
