Default Japanese etiquette.....

Can anyone tell me what the etiquette is for receipt of a valentines present??

I just received a gift from one of the girls in my office.... what should I do? Should I thank here openly?

I know that 14 March is "White Day" here, so I should give her a gift then, but what should I do now??

(By the way, this is a serious question - I don't want to offend anyone in my office!!!)

You can thank her discreetly but don't make a big deal of it because she is only doing her "duty". You can reciprocate on White Day but again make it discreet Actually you should give all the girls white chocolate on white day, just a little.

As my daughter is taking Japanese in high school, I asked her to ask her teacher if there's any protocol for this typeof situation. She'll let me know this afternoon and I'll post what she says lickety-split. I hope it's helpful and timely.

... agreed. No good could come of that.

I saw this post yesterday and refrained from delving in (though I was tempted.

Giving real advice and post-whoring... two SEPARATE things.

Glad you got some good feedback.

No worries mate

Unless she gave something to all the guys, what it probably means is that she feels that you have helped her out specially during the last year, so she feels indebted to you (o sewa ni natteimasu) and wants to say thanks with a gift. That's kind of what Valentines Day is for in Japanese companies. It doesn't mean she fancies you unless she hints at that in some other way, so your wife can rest easy. So, unless she is saying she fancies you it's perfectly OK to thank her openly but making a big deal of it would be embarrassing. On White Day you should give a small gift to the girls in the office who have been specially helpful to you.
