I'm sure you were in Mini-America. Since military bases are plentiful there, that's where many military members go. Unless the people were German, and spoke very good English, then I apologize. I'm currently stationedin Turkey, but will soon be in England.

when in munich, make sure you tour the bmw factory...the olympic park is nice as well and its within walking distance of the factory. check out the "augustiner keller". its a beer hall but not one infested with tourists like the hofbrauhaus...(although, that it fun in its own way)...i believe paulaner has a place there as well. like mentioned previously, plenty of unique places to drink. while i have been there a couple times, i have not made it to the deutsches museum which is supposed to be awesome.

I just got back from Oktoberfest as well. I've been to Munich several times and my wife has been dozens of times for work. Try to stay in the Excelsior Hotel in downtown if you can as it is right in the middle of the action. Across the street from the main train station, across the street from a Coffee Fellows (like a German Starbucks, only better). A 3 minute walk to the Marienplatz, the HofBrauHaus (overrated tourist trap), Augustiner Keller, SpatenHaus, The Residenz, the subway station, you name it.
Things to do in Munich.
1) Oktoberfest - too late for this year but EVERYONE has to experience it at least once. Awesome beyond description.
2) BMW Museum and Factory tour - Call ahead for reservations
3) Rent the best car you can (read fast) and do a day trip on the Autobahn. I suggest Garmisch-Partenkirchen. Also Berchesgaden with Hitler's Eagles Nest and the Konigsee is fun. Garmisch is better though.
4) Marienplatz with the Carillion. Touristy, but still cool.
5) Eat at the Haxnbauer. MUST do. Giant pig knuckles slow roasted on the bone. Bavarian food at its finest and not too bad pricewise.
6) If the weather is nice walk though the Englischer Garden (like a Central Park for Munich) and hit the biergarten.
7) Drink the best damn beer in the world all the time, with everything.

All pointless unless you rented a fast car or bike and maxed it out on the Bahn.
Sadly with all the "races" coming into the country, lane control and driver skill is starting to slip. You have to drive very early in the morning or very late at night but 170 plus at night is better than Viagra

We were going to rent a car, but it would have been a bigger pain in the ass practicality wise, we just took the ICE train everywhere.
But... One client picked us up from the station in an Alpina B7 and we had to take the Bahn to where we were going, so I politely asked if he minded if I drove. 240 plus, rock solid, and wondering why I can't do this at home. I actually felt really safe doing it too.
