That whole part about saving the environment by getting a Prius is crap; unfounded. If you find yourself in a conversation with one of those clowns be sure to point out how harmful the manufacture of those batteries were to the earth and how it will take 85K miles before a Prius even breaks even with an S and if you get a new battery for one it will never happen. Wall Street Journal had a great article on that.
I don't get the hype of hybrids (aside from pollution standards). I mean you can find a cheap toyota echo that gets about 36-38mpg, instead of the overpriced Prius that gets about 4-5 mpg more. Then you have those batteries to worry about, ect. Doesn't seem worth it to me.
I'm a conservative NRA member who owns both a S2k AND a 3rd generation Prius ('11), and you're citing debunked myths about the batteries. I drive my midsize Prius with a fairly heavy foot and average 45 MPG in the winter (I have a set of winter tires / wheels) and 50 MPG in the summer. Acceleration and handling weren't the reasons I bought the car, but it's faster than my 07 Subaru Outback. The only real disadvantage to the Prius is that it doesn't do well accelerating in icy / slushy conditions because the nanny circuits prevent all wheelspin to safeguard the electric motors. I drive over 30K miles per year and my commute is 80% freeway. The Prius is a good fit for my needs - especially when gas is above $4 a gallon. Granted, there are hyper-miling Prius-driving greenies who hold up traffic and tick off other drivers. They are the reason that the rest of us Prius drivers have to deal with aggression from other drivers.
