Just to P... them Off
Correct on the Battery production process. The whole sales gimmick is crap with the prius, if you're about saving gas I get it. That's what they are marketed for, not for being environment friendly. There are several papers on the subject from several universities, search for them and they will turn up. Now on a lighter note

Did just that.
Sold my SUV that was averaging 20mpg
1,000 miles a month / 20mpg = 50 gallons x $4.00 = $200 a month
Bought a used 2010 Prius that has been averaging 50mpg
1,000 miles a month / 50mpg = 20 gallons x $4.00 = $80 a month
So for about the same price I sold my SUV and got a Prius, now I'm saving about $1500 a year in gas.
The Prius is a great commuter car and it's not that slow, 134hp is enough for daily driving. Almost no maintenance required, 10k mile oil changes, not a single belt to change, brakes last forever, no smog checks required (ever), 10yr/150k mile warranty on the hybrid system including the drive battery.
I recently got 61mpg on a 45 mile trip up to LAX
You can throw a Prius owner a rev but once you've experienced the economy of a Prius you just laugh at people slogging along in stop-n-go traffic at 15mpg.
My S comes out of the garage when I want to have fun. The Prius handles the daily driving.
