Bumping because I just finished the book. If you like a good special forces page turner, you can not do any better than this book. Its fascinating.

The delta guys are special people. I was impressed with how they were written about in Black Hawk Down, but this stuff is even more impressive.

they didn't want the US to take the political hit for killing osama bin laden, so they tried to set up the afghanis to take the credit for it. the afghanis screw over the mission, osama bin laden gets away. yet another example of political fallout being put higher on the priority list than accomplishing the mission, resulting in mission failure. sigh.

Why would there be any political hit for killing Osama bin Hidin'?

guess i could have worded that better

osama bin laden being killed by the US would have made him a martyr to the whole arab world. on the other hand, osama bin laden being killed by the afghanis would be politically spun by our gov as 'proof' that our efforts over there were working and that the people of that country supported us and opposed terrorism

just my opinion of course.

The US political and military leadership did not think there would be or did not care about a political hit. It helps to read the book because as the author describes, a lot of what came out about the Tora Bora battle the media got wrong.

IMHO, the US would have sent a very powerful message of "attack us at your own peril" if they had been successful in getting him, and the people riled up about his death would have not been sympathetic to the US in the first place.
