Default Know anything about blood clots? :-(

Dad's in the hospital right now. Deep venus thrombosis. They have him on heparin. He's doing fine, the leg's swollen of course, but it's not too much discomfort for him. However, while we were hanging out in the ER this afternoon, he said a sharp pain on his right side appeared. They did a CT scan to see if a clot broke off and moved up there, but we haven't heard anything yet.

How worried should I be?

Mark, I'm sorry to hear about your dad! I'll put him in my prayers and hope for a speedy recovery...

As I understand it, clots can form if the blood gets stagnant in a part of the body. Usually caused by inactivity. If you're on a long trans-oceanic plane flight, be sure to get up and move around periodically. Anyway, a few weeks ago he got tendonitis on the Achilles tendon, prohibiting his usual racquetball and bowling. So he's been sitting at work a lot, and sitting at home a lot too. Symptoms typically are a sore and swollen leg, since the blood can't flow out of it very well.

Naishou's right. Once theyve caught it and got him on anticoagulants he should be fine.

DVT can be extremely dangerous if you don't realise you have it and you end up having a stroke or worse.
