Before any Laker fan starts to panic...it should be remembered that the Lakers went 1-7 in the preseason last season.
The Lakers' charter flight left Hawaii this morning.
Shaq, Fisher, and Madsen are scheduled to be examined tomorrow, so their recovery status will be updated then.
Update on Shaq:
"Although he dismissed it as an insignificant event, Shaquille O'Neal took part in a bit of practice Monday morning. He rather nonchalantly took his turn in a non- contact, individual post-up drill. Mark Madsen, recovering from left wrist surgery, also participated.
O'Neal, recovering from toe surgery, left the drill early to relax again on the side and said his left pinky toe is still sore, but he is making some progress. He will be re-examined Thursday in Los Angeles. O'Neal has also been working on conditioning in the pool and on the treadmill." (OCR)
---
About their struggles in the game, Cleamons said: "It's a learning process. And we have a steep learning curve." (HA)
"I thought we did a decent job until midway through the second when they went to a pressure unit. I guess we could have countered, but we wanted to play players a certain amount of minutes in certain combinations. So when (Golden State) went to a pressure unit ? and we haven't practiced that much against pressure ourselves ? obviously it showed and we paid the price." (HA)
About the status of their team, Cleamons said:
"We're as good or better healthwise than when we came here. So that is a blessing. I think we're in decent shape. We're not in game shape obviously. You won't be in game shape until you cut your numbers down and guys get a little bit harder running over a shorter period of time. Right now, we've got so many guys and doing so much teaching, that guys aren't getting the reps thatthey need." (LADN)
About Shaq's recovery from surgery, Cleamons said:
"I'm assuming his therapy's coming along positively. The medical staff hasn't expressed any concern to me. The assumption is everything's progressing status quo." (LAT)
About the game, Kobe said:
"They went on a run, scored a lot more points than we did and we just never caught up. I was trying to keep everybody in the offense and see what we could do. It takes a while to learn this offense, and this is to be expected." (HA)
Feeling he'll contribute if he stays healthy, Richmond: "My whole expectation is staying healthy. And with the stuff I've learned in the offense, if I stay healthy, I can be a big part of this team." (OCR)
About Don Nelson's offer to reunite the members of "Run-TMC" (Tim Hardaway, Richmond, Mullin) in Dallas this season, Richmond said:
"It was very tempting. We talked about it a lot. (Dallas) was one of the teams that was in my top three. And there was definitely some interest there to reunite with those guys. And the team they already had was a pretty good team. To be able to put us three on the same team, and with that group, I think we could have helped." (LADN)
Note: The other team Richmond seriously considered was SA.
Explaining why he chose the Lakers, Richmond said:
"Coming here, the world champions and playing with a dominant center, playing with a great scorer, Kobe (Bryant), and a great coach (Phil Jackson). It was a really hard decision. But it wasn't that hard. Because it was the world champions." (LADN)
About how he won't be as vocal with Kobe as Harper was, Richmond said:
"I'm not going to be pushy or anything like that. I'll be there for him if he needs any questions answered, and I hope that's vice versa. I never played in the championship game or even went as far as the second round, so I think basically I'm going to be learning from these guys." (LADN)
About playing against Kobe, rookie Tony Richardson said:
"nytime you play against a guy like Kobe, you're going to learn a lot." (HA)

Laker Jackson Back
10/11/01 by Garret Okamoto
The Lakers Will Practice Today and Will see Jackson for the First Time in 9 days. LAT reports that Buss told Hawaii Gov. Cayetano that he would like for the Lakers to train in Hawaii every other year. That is not surprising, as Buss had said that for awhile (dating back before the lockout). However, the Lakers hadn't gone to Hawaii in awhile...and Jackson gave many direct quotes about how he'd prefer to have their camp at their training facility.

That is not surprising, as Buss had said that for awhile (dating back before the lockout). However, the Lakers hadn't gone to Hawaii in awhile...and Jackson gave many direct quotes about how he'd prefer to have their camp at their training facility. It is amazing to me how the different papers can talk with the same player and come up with such widely differing angles. RPE made it sound like Penberthy was down on his chances and definitely like he was not confident. Their headline summarized their angle: "Guard surplus breeds unease." However, the quotes from LADN and LBPT (same article reprinted in both papers) provided a number of quotes that made Penberthy sound confident with his chances. It also made Penberthy sound like he wasn't worried about the competition he had from the other guards in camp for a roster spot, which was definitely NOT the case in the RPE article. I also find it amusing with how the editors of LADN and LBPT spin things. All season long those papers will print the same articles (written by Howard Beck), but the editors will cut out quotes sometimes as they see fit. At times, those cuts will change the whole context of the article. In addition, the headlines they choose for their articles can create a different mood or spin on the article. For example, today LADN's headline on the Penberthy article was "Penberthy no sure thing", while LBPT's headline was "Penberthy is now a hot commodity". Those headlines are so different in tone and content, whihc is surprising since the articles they headline are exactly the same.

Praising Crispin, Cleamons said: "H showed he'll compete." (LAT)
About Penberthy's experience with the triangle offense is an asset to him, Cleamons said:
"It surely should give him a leg up in terms of competing for a spot. With this system, he knows how the ball has to move, should move, where his shots should come from. So he should be extremely comfortable in terms of what he needs to do in order to compete." (LADN)
Unsure of his chances, Penberthy said:
"We do have a lot of guards. But what could I do? I had to sign here." (RPE)
"Sure, I know what the question is: Where does Mike get some playing time? I don't know. I could have the best camp and it still may not matter. Those guys have proven themselves, and that's what the coaches like." (RPE)
"If I get some playing time, I think I can start to play better. But there are a lot of guards here. So I don't know what's going to happen." (RPE)
Sounding confident, Penberthy said:
"It's mine to lose. I had to beat somebody out last year. (Teammates) know me, too. I'm not looking for the ball -- they trust me with it." (LADN)
About how he and Crispin are often matched up in scrimmages, Penberthy said:
"There's no competition to me." (LADN) Note: "Crispin, though two or three inches shorter than Penberthy, is quicker and appears to be just as capable a shooter. He made a big impression in Tuesday's exhibition game against Golden State, scoring 12 points on 4-of-9 shooting in 24 minutes. Penberthy, who played a scant seven minutes, cheered him on from the bench." (LADN)
About the other guards in camp, Penberthy said:
"I don't see players that I'm trying to compete with. I don't play any harder against anybody else because they're competing with me or not. If it's Brian Shaw or Joe Crispin or Isaac Fontine or Mitch Richmond, it's all the same to me. I'm just going to go out and try to do what the coaches want me to do and do as much as I can." (LADN)
About how the Lakers have until Dec. 15 to guarantee his contract, Penberthy said:
"If they keep me, great. If not, then I'll go somewhere else." (LADN)
Asked about his knee (he banged it in Tuesday's game and was limping slightly afterwards), Penberthy said: "No complaints." (LAT)
Sounding much more confident with the triangle now, Hunter:
"From the first day compared to now, it's like night and day, because I didn't know which way to go when I first got here. It's quite complex at times and I'm slowly learning my way, learning where to get shots from, feeling different players out in the offense, and just feeling comfortable." (LADN)
Feeling comfortable with the triangle offense, Richmond:
"I was scared how fast I'd pick up the offense, but I've felt really comfortabl." (OCR)
About playing exclusively at PF in practice between their two exhibition games, helping him feel more comfortable in their 2nd exhibition game, Walker said:
"It was force-feeding, but I picked it up pretty easy. I had made a statement -- I thought it was going to be an easy offense -- I take that back. I'll eat my words. There's so many different aspects of the offense, man. It is detailed." (LADN)
"I made a statement that it was an easy offense. You remember? Well, I take that back." (LAT)
Unhappy with how McCoy has picked up the triangle, Winter:
"He's not a real good learner." (OCR)
Note: Winter praised Simpkins, who learned the triangle in Chicago.
About how they could keep both Simpkins and McCoy, Winter:
"You don't want to shortchange yourself on size." (OCR)
About how he'll have to learn the triangle, McCoy said:
"I think I'm a smart dude. I've just got to get it done." (OCR)
