Default Laptop Over Heating?

Ok, Im home about 10% of the day so a desktop PC is almost useless to me. So I decided to get a laptop. Yet, I wanted one that could run Modern games like Never Winter Nights, Morrow Wind, Black and White, O.R.B...... Etc. So I went to Best Buy and asked them if there is a Laptop that could run these programs. They Said that the Toshiba Satellite can with no problem at all. So, I Got it. Its a 2.4Ghz, Pentium 4,With a Nvidia G-force 4 3D Card. Anyway, when I play games like Star Craft, Diablo1 or 2, or some cheap games. It doesnt even get a little hot, but when I play games like Never Winter Nights, Morrow Wind, Black and White, O.R.B...... Etc. It starts getting a little hot. And after about 30 mins it gets so hot I cant even hold it. Its surprising the cover doesnt melt. This is a BIG prob for me since I am usually playing this on my lap. I searched for cooling pads and I couldnt really find anything that would help me. I need something that will cool the Laptop not just elevate it. Dose anything like this exist? And is this over heating thing normal? The guy at Best Buy said it was, but this is Crazy it will littarly heat the hole interior of my car like a space heater. So im asking all you laptop owners, is there any tricks to cooling it a LOT! Or should I return it? What do you guys think?

Thx,

I heard the new Dells run a little cooler than the older ones. My uncle bought a new one, and it runs warm, not hot! My cousin also bought a new one, but I haven't checked out the heat issue on his yet. I have an older one, and I play counterstrike on it. But it burns really hot, but to be honest, I've never had any problems with it. I haven't seen or heard of any laptops causing problems due to overheating... just my experience.

I can play those games, and my specs are way less than yours (Dell Desktop Comp) so they should run very smooth.... Did it come with a warranty? Laptop computers nowadays are a large investment, I would return it, especially if you are a frequent gamer... I haven't had any experience with the Toshiba, but my friend has a Dell Laptop and it is pretty reliable..

Unfortunately a lot of laptop's have poor cooling designs. Mine gets HOT when playing any 3D game. But I also have an ECS Desknote which uses desktop processor and ram, so my P4 2.4 is actually running at 2.4 GHz the whole time.

About the only thing you can do is go to a good custom builder like alienware.com that designs some wicked gaming laptops... pricey as hell though.

I love alienware computers, the design alone is something to marvel at!! But once I looked at the price tag, I parted ways with alienware

I agree. I might take the plunge on one when I build my house... Thats the only way I can justify the price tag. Cash back mortgages rock

I Have 3 year warranty on this laptop so im gona keep it (Its bin good to me so far) But this heating problem is ridiculous. Im wondering if there is any cooling pads (that are electric maybe with A GIANT FAN on the bottom!) to keep this thing cool. I bought this cooling pad and it doesn't do anything It just "elevates it" spreading the heat more. It is pretty pointless to be honest.

And also, (Im asking this for my brother) He has a Compaq it Locks up about ever 5-10mins he cant do anything with out it freezing, any tips? (except for running the recover CDs.)

Thx all,

if it makes you feel any better, the 12" apple powerbooks, running on Mac OS 10.2.4, has reached a temperature of 120 degrees F in 45 minutes of usage.

I have an iBook and the laptop sometimes gets overheated. Oddly, it's only on the left hand side - hand rest area. There is an internal fan that kicks in when the laptop reaches a certain temperature, but it is noisy and annoying. I keep a small desktop fan next to my laptop and when I feel like its starting to get warm, I just turn it on and so far it's helped to keep the internal fan off.
