I set mine on the top of a hardcover book - if both sides of the bottom vent, it usually stays pretty cool.

I have a DELL laptop (Company issued) and it's SHIT! Poor built quality. Before the lease was up on our laptops, we had IBM's...They are pretty good. I have also heard good things about Compaq.

the department i'm in at my school, industrial design, requires students to buy a lap top from a sorta group buy.

my year the computer we had to buy was from dell,
a couple of mo. later we had to send the computers back to the dell and get it replaced or fixed,
because from over heating, dell decided that there was a slight chance the battery could explode.

Mobile chip power consumption and cooling problems have plagued AMD and Intell since they started making mobile chips (which for AMD hasn't been that long) I'd look at the speed of the chip you are buying in relation to what chip you are buying in the future. Intell and AMD basically have the same chip clocked to different speeds (ie the chip used for a 1.9ghz chip is the same design as the chip used for a 2.4ghz chip). So if you buy a chip that has been clocked to the max, your computer is going to run much hotter then the lower to mid clocked chips. I know we always want the best and baddest computer out when we buy, but the honest truth is that hardware has far surpassed software requirements now and you can get away with buying a mid-level processor now and be fine to run all the software you'll need for a few years. Just thought I'd give my $.02 One more thing....I think those toshiba Satelites are awsome But with the size that they are you do tend to run hotter because all of your components are so close together and there isn't as much space to disperse heat as a there is in a larger machine.
