laptop recommendation
Check out the amazing deals on the dell site. Try www.techbargains.com to see how to save some money.
I was all set to order a Dell until a thread on this board pretty much persuaded me otherwise. I had a Dell desktop in the past and had problems but customer service was usually good. Have since heard differently.
The IBM's are durable. We have a small "fleet" of portables and they last best... but they're expensive as heck and feature-for-feature too heavy. I want the best video (games & such) so the high end Dell portable is my favorite. Our Toshiba's, Sony's, and even some Compaq's, don't last well on the road (they break).
I have an IBM and my wife has a Vaio. The thing that impresses me most about Sony is that their total line of products are designed to integrate; digital cameras, printers, camcorders, etc. They have designed the evolution of all of their handheld products to center on the memory stick with all being compatible. I'm impressed with the technical design, quality and styling of all of their products.
IBM quality is impressive also. I've had no problems with my laptop. I've never viewed IBM's product line as being targeted towards the average consumer or small business.

I have a Dell Inspiron 8100, Understand I got this 3-4 months ago, and right now you can get exact details for $1300. I bought mine back then for $1800.
Specs:
P3 866 mhz
128 megs pc133 ram
20 gigz 7200 rpm
Ethernet/modem
15" Ultra Moniter (The Top Dell Has)
CD-Rom (32x)
DVD 8X
WIN ME (XP is now available)
There is prolly more specs, but it's not in my mind right now. It was great cause we got either 150 dollars back or option for DVD or CD-Burner with it. Of course i chose DVD. GOod Luck

Turbo,
Appreciate but I'm reluctant to order something sight unseen. Last time I shopped desktops, IBM's weren't available in retail stores. Is that still the case?

I know of two HP's that have crapped out after just a year of service. The current company that I am contracting for uses Dell, the company that placed me there uses Dell and I have the Dell Inspiron 4000 which has been a great laptop.
I'm pretty much sold on Dell right now. I'm not sure how their customer service is... I've never needed it.
