I vote for the dell! The inspiron 8000's are great boxes.

And go to www.delloutlet.com and save even more.

I recently purchased a Compaq Presario 1700T with 512MB RAM and Win2000 for something like $1700.

As for watching cable TV on a notebook computer; the graphic cards which allow you to do this are PCI or AGP cards and as far as I know, they don't make notebooks with available slots like that. ATI and others have USB TV tuners but there's some debate about how well they work.

stay awy from the Sony's indeed. try the dell stores that are suggested or the IBM's which are great great great! both have their pluses and minuses. one thing is for sure, forget trying to work with the 'nipple' or touchpad and get a $30 optical mouse.

I have a Sony VAIO desktop which was largely why I was considering the laptop. Don't have any of the other accessories that use the memory stick but have considered buying a compatible digital camera as well. I'm a slow shopper so I'm sure by the time I make a decision the VAIO will be outdated.

I would stay away from Sony laptops. Long term reliability is an issue.

I personally own a Compaq M700 and I love it. Nice screen and good performance. DVD playback is outstanding.
