I thought bluray players and hd-dvd drives required an HDCP compliant device, which is only supported over HDMI on every LG 32" LCD TV.

[QUOTE=CalBear,May 7 2007, 04:53 PM] Now my follow-up question is- are those HDMI cables worth buying? My cable company has the component cables only I think.

Costco has changed their return policy on electronics.. probably because people were abusing it.

I would not purchase an extended warranty for a direct view LCD. I would consider it for a TV that had a bulb, such as LCoS, or DLP, depending on the specific coverage and cost.
Agreed. I bought extendo for my Sony SXRD 50. It's good for 4 years, and covers anything. Even a single lamp replacement, and I'm expecting 2, makes it worth while.

My SXRD is less than two years old and has an issue with the optical block... something for which Sony recently extended factory coverage from 12 mos to 24... but the Circuit CIty guys have been super helpful. Came out, diagnosed, ordered the part and will do the 1-2 hr install next week. All for free and with no hassle to me.

no, they only require HDCP if you use HDMI or DVI. DVI is electically the same as HDMI and thus also supports HDCP.

They all work on component just fine. Some of the newer ones even do 1080p via component. Don't forget, the Xbox only has analog connections. That supports 1080p output via its component or optional VGA outputs.

Only very new TVs accept 1080p over component. It's all moot anyway, because for 24-frame film content, there is really no difference between 1080i and 1080p because the output is 60fps, thus the even and odd frames are displayed before the movie moves on to the next frame.

Now, the HD-DVD and Blu-Ray discs/players have what is called the Image Constraint Token (ICT) that, if enabled on a disc, will only do 480p over any analog connection. No studios have enabled that option and none plan to anytime soon.

Doing so would limit their market because many of the early adopters (the ones buying the discs) were probably early adopters in the HDTV age and probably don't have sets with HDCP capability. Pissing off early adopters will surely make your new format fail.

2 year warranty is one thing.. what we were referring to was the return policy. basically you could bring a set back whenever you wanted for any reason (or no reason).
