Learning stuff at a middle age...
Thanks for the responses! I'd really like to learn swimming and rollerskating so I can exercise. The other things can wait. What advice can you give me regarding learning to rollerskate? I can sort of stay on them, but I can't stop.
I'm middle-aged, no need to list the exact age number.

I am 37 and am right there with you.... I would like to learn some stuff (like guitar, paino, swimming, etc...) but realize that I probably never will.
I can do the breast stroke for a few laps but freestyle swimming is completely out for me (the breathing = water consumption). i can do the back stroke for a few laps as well, but I quickly run out of breath from never swimming... I can run a 6;00 mile or Mt. bike for a couple of hours but can only make it 5-6 laps total in a pool before I collapse
I have always been good at racquet sports (played on Tennis team, etc..) but for some reason I have always sucked at ice skating and skiing.... I haven't even skiing in 20 years..... I am sure I would suck at snowboarding too.....
Post back what you are going to attempt and I maybe attempt the same thing so we can be support buddies... (not that there is anything wrong with that
)

I think you can learn whatever you really want to, almost regardless of age. Yes, there are increasing risk factors so you do it as safely as possible. Some things should be checked out with your doctor first but I don't see "do a triathalon" on your list.

First thing first, I will find a place, like a park, to practice rollerskating. I'm sure along the way, I'll fall a few times, but that's how things have to be.
Support buddies, huh? Sure, why not! I'll just will my mental support to you from thousands of miles away.

Regarding learning piano, the older one gets, the much harder it will be, since your fingers and coordination are not as fluid and natural as compared to young children. Same with learning a foreign language, once one passes the age of 13, one's tongue is no longer as fluid and natural as it was when much younger. That's why no matter how fluent one will be in a foreign language, there will always be an accent. Children, on the other hand, will lose their native accents. Conclusively, old age does have its limitations.
I learned how to swim at a local college in my area when I was in the 5th grade.It was a month and a half course,I got it down in 2 weeks.
my suggestion is if you have kids take them to a local swimming pool and take some classes with them.
I'm only 29 but don't have the time to do the things i want ex:dirtbiking,snowboarding,skydiving,golfing,etc.
I think if you have the time you should go ahead and try new things...better now then wanting to try these things when you're really old.like 44 or something.
peace

Soon, I'll be 44.
No longer a stallion. But hey, Rocky is still a stallion at 60.
