Learning stuff at a middle age...
There are worse rants.
As far as the musical instruments: why piano or guitar? I mean, yeah, they're popular, but I would suggest that you try as many as you can. You may find one that you have an easier time with, and have those great "leaps of success."
What's important is that you study music; that'll keep you young for years and years. Even though you will not learn at the rate at which a 5-25 year-old will learn, the actual benefits of going through the process of learning an instrument (or even taking formal singing lessons) will keep your mind limber (it helps build neural nets between the two hemispheres).
That said, if you're worried about the cost of getting started; either head to a music store or your local Adult Ed. program; there's usually a beginning keyboard class (or teacher) available.
If you get stuck; don't hesitate to PM me (I earned a B.M.Ed a few moons ago).

The reason for piano is because I feel it's the most beautiful sound in the world. Listening to piano makes my heart warm and fuzzy.
I never had a chance to learn at a young age, so wanting to learn it now.

I've done some autox and roadcourse races in previous summers (including in my AP1). Besides, I'd like to do other things that also require more than sitting in a chair. I'd like to be active again.
