I'm left handed, so I can't really use any of those 1911s eventhough I've always wanted one.

normally the slide release is on the left side (for right handed people), but both of the above features ambidextrous slide release, so i can release the slide on my left hand as well.

You might want to check out the Walther P5 which is not ambidextrous but, ejects to the left.

i'm not a big fan of walthers, but that does look interesting. however, the slide release on the right side is a really nice thing to have

Why can't you use a 1911? They make ambi-safeties and mag releases. I've never felt anything better than a 1911. I love the short trigger pull too.
