Default Life before Internet

Being in my early 20s, I have pretty much grown up with computers. Most colleges started going online in the early 90s and by the time I got to college most colleges had computers for student use. Well fast forward to today and here I am at work spending quite a bit of my time on the internet (most related to work but I would say at least an hour a day its just for fun (like s2ki). It definately makes the day go faster.

So what the hell did people do to slack off at work before the internet and computers? Did they talk? Play cards? Or did they actually do WORK? lol

It just seems so weird to imagine life without PCs and the internet.

I'm not all that much older (25), but one of my previous jobs was at a company without internet access. I worked 9 hour days, of which 8 1/2 hours was actually doing work (or something resembling work). The rest of the time was 'water cooler' time, mostly chit chatting about football, cars, or whatever. Of the time wasted there, most of it was just socializing with coworkers.

At my current job, of the 8 1/2 hours I'm here... I spend 4-5 on the internet (including moderating another forum ), an hour at lunch playing poker, an hour or so talking... and maybe an hour working. My job rules.

ya, you used to have to work most of the time at work..... of course faster computers have streamlined work, so you can actually get the same amount of work done in less time plus have time to surf....

I am with westside.... i work probably 2 hours a day.... used to work the full 7.5-8 hours before the internet!

I think that the internet has also made people more productive and efficient = less time needed to do the same job as before.

^ sorry, but that's BS. if people are able to finish their work faster due to efficiency, then maybe companies need to downsize and double or triple the remaining workers' work load. there is no reason for an employee of a company to have nothing to do and resort to surfing the web to kill time.

I don't believe that's true.

The internet allows me to look productive, without really accomplishing anything. Besides, it's a great way to avoid the real work I need to be doing.

Totally.

What's funny about my situation is that my boss's boss thinks that my boss should hire 1 or 2 more people because of all this work that's "just around the corner". My boss is resisting because he knows that we can get it done with our current group, maybe even if we lost one guy. But some "management" tool (obviously not based on common sense) they use says "hire more people!".
