Did the FAA or federal government contact a balloon expert or a physicist to see if a balloon of that size could even hold the weight of a boy that age? It looked to me that the balloon wouldn't have even got off the ground with a 50lb weight attached to it. Naaaa that is just too much common sense for the government.

^ According to earlier news reports, they did contact an expert and the expert determined that the balloon would be capable of lifting something like 60-80lbs off the ground. The boy weighed <40lbs.
But yes, I think the family should be responsible for paying the costs associated with the search & recovery efforts.
