Default Live for the day, or for the future? $$

No clue how to make a poll...(huhu.. i said poll). Just curious how most people spend / what their future plans are..

do you:
  • Live for the day with no worries about the future.

  • Living some now but saving some too for a decent retirement at a normal age (60-65)

  • Saving as much as possible to retire early (45-55 years old)

  • Saving as much as possible to retire early only to get cancer and die on retirement day.

  • Plan to marry into some $ or have a big inheritance coming.

  • Have kids heading to school soon, barely able to stay above water.

  • other - please explain.

Dear Moderator - feel free to make this a poll....

that's not a plan.
similar to saying my retirement plan is to win the lottery or win big at the casinos.

Live for today in what you do, but in reality you dont want to get caught with your pants down tomorrow.

My situation as example:

I have a substantial 7 figure inheritance + a seat at President of a construction company coming to me when my father retires. Say he retires in 10 years.. who knows.

Most people my age (20) would be piss drunk everynight, no money to their own name and floating through day to day until Daddy retires.

heres the catch.. What if I did live that way and for some reason the company goes under? What if.

Thats why I live on my own without help at all. That way, Im set by myself. Any inheritance at all is bonus. You cant live today and think that tomororw youll get through on hopes and dreams. World today doesnt work that way.

Live for today, have the bank for tomorrow.

Both, I guess (though it helps if you have a decent amount of $$$). I don't believe in extreme delayed gratification, but I also HATE financial stress. I don't deny myself much that I really want, but I also don't really want anything that will cause financial stress (Hmmmm...I balance myself out nicely). In the end, I can't think of any "stuff" that is worth financial stress, though. I'd rather not worry about $$$.

seems like most people on this board live decent but are smart enough to save.

most of my relatives all have nothing but save nothing and will probably never have anything...

I spend $ on stupid shit (racing an S2000 is not a good way to save $), but hopefully won't be working in a boring job until i die..... we'll see though.

This one.

I'd like to save enough to retire at 45, but I'm not willing to sacrifice my current standard of living that much.

Me=Save.

A good way to do it is to set up an automatic transfer of funds every two weeks or so from your checking to savings, or money management acct., or from pay to 401k; designate enough to accomplish whatever goal you have by a certain age.. just put that money out of your mind as if it isn't yours. Spend whatever is left over. Have fun!!!

edit: probably preaching to the choir here...

I hate my 401k!

I am sure over time it all works well, but it is definately discouraging to dump $ in and still watch it drop so much..it has dropped over 5% since October even with weekly contributions...

I had concentrated on paying off loans instead of saving. I only have 3 mortgages on my remaining 12-13 rental houses and no car payments... at least I can guarantee some interest savings that way instead of gambling with the stock market.

I save whatever I can, but I also enjoy my toys. Big screen TV, entertainment system, motorcycle, car, etc. Whatever's left over goes in the bank.

Currently saving up for the next big toy... a house. *shivers*
