Default Living in New York City

So, I'm thinking about moving to New York. I went to a design/art school in Rhode Island, and I frequented New York, Boston and etc... But living in a city is different than visiting them.

For those who live in New York, here is a survey to help me out move up there.

1. where do you guys live? and how far are you from manhattan?

2. How are you taking care of S2000? A garage? Off street parking?

3. Do you have a house or condo, or apartment?

4. Where is a good neighborhood for a graphic designer who paints and does a lot of photography?

Just few questions. any help will be great.

Thanks!

Prepare to live in a closet for the price of a house.

An S2000 in Manhattan? That'd be ugly. My mom rents a parking space for an absurd monthly fee, I'm thinking it was $350!

NYC doesn't equate to the borough of Manhattan. There are four other boroughs to consider. But yes, renting a parking spot can be quite pricey.

Getting into Manhattan is a minor PITA if you aren't living there imo. Pay attention to the trains - I have friends that live in the Uper East Side and friends that live in Brooklyn, and I'd rather live in Manhattan than not. Transferring trains can make the communte into the city take longer than you'd think.

As for a car, you'd be best off with a garage, or leave it out of the city.

garage costs in Manhattan are in excess of many apt. rental prices outside of the city.

Getting into Manhattan on the weekdays are usually fine. On the weekend, that's a different story because that's when MTA schedule for their maintenaces. Transferring trains isn't a big deal. You'll be able to find quite a few stations that have multiple train lines running through. Parking in the city is just next to impossible.
