Yeah, Long-distance relationships suck. Never again. I'm now dating someone local and we've seen each other more in the first 3 weeks than I saw the LD girl in the first 6 months. And driving the car is cheaper and more fun than catching a plane.

any relationship's success depend on timing, place, and commitment.
i've done quite a few LDs before i got married, and it's nice if you're the kind that likes to have more than one companion at a time, but if you're not, then it's usually not workable.

My wife is from San Diego and I'm from the most easterly city in North America (St. John's, Newfoundland, Canada). That translates to over 5000 miles between us. We kept a relationship for over three years before we married, with visits maybe three (sometimes four) times a year. Tough but doable.
That said, neither of us moved away from the other. That's definitely an act that requires some thought (as others have pointed out). If you are both dedicated, it's doable but very, very tough. If you are both just sort of into the relationship (ie, not totally committed), it'll never work.

Oh my gosh!!! I've been so busy. I got engaged over the Christmas. And yes, I said, "Yes" after much thought, of course. It will be a long engagement. We're thinking about Oct 2004. After I finish school and have some time off. But in the mean time... we are both making an effort to see each other at least once a month, if not once every 5-6 weeks. Summer time will be a lot better. I'll be spending about 3 months with him. 
I love him so much. But he loves me even more...
