Default Looking for a DSLR

Hey guys,

I've finally decided to spoil myself and get a digital SLR. I'm thinking Canon. All my past cameras have been Canons and I love the way they take pictures. What would you recommend for under $1000?

I'm not hardcore into photography (but that doesn't mean I won't be after getting a desent camera) but I'm looking for something that I can use for when my wife and I have our first child, and just for general use.

Thanks in advance.

Canon. Has never let me down. dropped it many times, driven away with the camera on the top of the car and the sigma lens snapped off. still shooting with that body to this day. Had Canons before back in the the early digital and film days and never let me down. Start off with an entry level dslr (used or new is your choice, depends if you want warranty, that new camera smell, etc.)

Lens, buy good lens when you feel you are going to be taking alot of pictures, and you get over the new camera phase. Good lens is where the quality is and they will hold there resale value more so than the camera body and also you buy a good lens once and you can upgrade the body in the future. I have bought plenty of lens used, only one new. some people prefer buying a lens new because of the tight tolerances included, however try out a lens for a few seconds you will know if its a piece of crap or not.

You can get a brand new Canon 50D for under $1000 USD and they're typically under $900 (used) on Craigslist. Canadian prices are going to be higher, though, as a Canon XSi or T1i is right at $1000 CAD.
