Can't go wrong with a "Kuro" Pioneer.

Panasonic plasma FTW, since I own one.
Also an excellent choice. Many of you may not know it but Pioneer no longer manufactures their plasma display panels. They buy them from Panasonic. Pioneer still makes the driver electronics. The Panasonic panels are that good apparently.

The electronics are more important.. there are onlya handful of LCD manufacutrers in the whole world, yet TVs with identical panels can look worlds apart.

I'm very happy with my new Sony KDL-40XBR6.

I'm thoroughly impressed with the viewing angle of plasmas, specifically my own - Samsung PN50A450 50". I just found it locally for $999.99 canadian. I paid $1200 a couple months ago.

Definitely not top of the line but it does the trick for me very well and from the roughly 8' viewing distance it's just about perfect. I wouldn't want bigger from that short distance, and to rotate the room lengthwise I'd want a less reflective screen as the wall of windows would be behind the sofa creating extreme glare from outside.

A little off topic, it almost seems to me that retail stores are trying really hard to compete with online retailers from a price perspective so I'm becoming more comfortable with shopping locally for this stuff, especially based on the sensitivity of some of these panels and my concerns for shipping issues.

Yeah sweet deal!

Still bucketloads more than I'm willing to pay for a TV now though. Quite frankly, once I'm in the market for anything larger than 52" and I'll be picking up a decent projector and screen. For $4k you could have a very nice HD projector and wall-mounted or drop down screen.

I just went and looked at some tvs today.

Starting with the DLPs, the Mitsu DLPs look much better than the Samsungs and have a much better off-center viewing angle, but they are all bulb DLPs, so there's an added expense down the road. Of course, it seems bulbs are coming down in price, so $150 for a bulb every two-four years seems better than $300. Samsung's biggest LED DLP is only 67" too.

Since DLPs are dying out as a whole, I also looked at the biggest plasma and LED flatscreens in the store (hhGregg). Basically twice the price at $3k, the plasma looked the best from all viewing angles, but it was only 65". I will probably wait and see what comes around next year. I think Mitsu has the best DLPs but I'd like to see LED instead of bulb lighting.
