Default Looking for Info and Opinions on Doberman Pinschers

Guys im seriously looking into getting a dog soon, and from the moderate research i've done, i feel that this dog fits me well. The only drawbacks are that this will be my first dog, and that ive heard obiedience can be a problem. Does anyone have any experience other info on these dogs?

Thanking in advance

just pay lots of attention to these dogs, if you ignore them they will pretty much become wild, dig holes in backyards etc... if you pay lots of attention they will be loyal and playful with everyone, which is a good thing.
I had a pitbull and a rott that were very very loyal and very playful because all the attention it had gotten, but yet they were still very protective of me when felt in danger I miss those dogs

if this is your first dog I suggest you first get a smaller dog and begin training that till you feel comfortable with your training habbits, the bigger dog can do more damage.

either way, whatever you decide doing goodluck bro

No offense, but I would start with a small collie or something if you have never had a dog before. Short-haired collies are pretty quick, easily learning all the tricks you teach it, and will make life easy for you by remembering when to eat, and where the food is, and will even pick up a new bag at the store when you run low Seriously, if you have never had a dog before, I think a known obedience issue would be the last thing you want. Especially in a big dog like a Doberman. A smarter dog, with a long history of living and working with people is a better choice. If you want a huge dog, a St. Bernard might be a better choice, although a dog that size has its own issues.

There are a ton of really smart, healthy medium-sized dogs, both mixed-breed and pure-bred. Especially if the dog has to spend a great deal of time indoors, I would stay away from big dogs. The larger the dog, the more physical space they need, and you really can't responsibly let your Doberman have the run of the neighborhood while you're at work.

If you are looking for protection, a medium-sized dog will wake the neighborhood, and even forty pounds of pissed off muscle and teeth is a potent weapon, when it's dark, in unfamiliar terrain. Just IMHO, I haven't had a dog for years, now.

What's a "small Collie"? I've owned several Collies (rough and smooth) and they're 50 - 70 lbs. Smooth Collies have a propensity to be neurotic barkers. (Ours is outside barking like a fool right now.)

Collies are great dogs, especially around children: they protect them as if they were sheep. (I know: in many ways they are.)

The man who gave my wife away at our wedding owned a liver Doberman named Isis. She was a sweetheart, but looked very intimidating. And in the house she was dangerous because of her size and, shall we say, enthusiasm.

A smaller dog isn't necessarily the solution. We have a Jack Russell terrier that is more of a handful than most dogs 4- to 5-times her size. A less frenetic dog would probably be a better first choice.

I'm with no_really: check out the pound and you'll find some really great mixed-breed dogs.

If its your first dog, get a miniture (definitely spelled that wrong) pinscher, or a mix of the two. Our mix Dino is the best dog ever.

This dogs are the best! I had two and now im planning on getting a mini-doberman (For an apartment).
They are super smart, but the only bad thing is that they tend to loose smell and attack because they dont recognize u anymore, but never happened to me. Excellent watch dogs.

Shifty, I have a Doberman, in fact she wants to go out right now. This is MY first dog, although I have had around 6 different dogs groing up, this one is mine (although sometimes she thinks I am hers).

That is the problem with dobermans, they are domainant in nature, my dog walks around like her shit dont stink, but she knows I'm the boss. As for a gaurd dog, she isn't at all, if you broke-in, she will attack you and lick you to death. Nothing but squirrels and birds "get her going" and even when she and I wrestle she knows when to stop (when I say so).

Should this be YOUR first dog (I'm guessing you have had family dogs in the past) well thats up to you, there are days where shes lying on the t.v. remote asleep, and I wish I got a Jack Russell Terrier (no way am I putting my hand under a 100lb. dog while its asleep, I dont care if its a 100lb. Labador). I just wake her up and get the remote, problem solved, but my brother is not as gentle as I and get the crap scared out of him when he attempts this move, and has her right in his face barking.

I got her because she was gorgeous, smart, big (now she's almost too big) and not as common. I am completely happy with her, Its just she can be very intimidating to others

If you have any other questions, P.M. me I can tell you evreything I know first hand about Dobes.

Good luck in your search!
-Patrick

p.s. thers is no such thing as a mini Doberman, there are mini Pinshcers but not mini-dobermans.... and before someone asks, a Doberman Pinscher and a German Pinsher are different dogs (share some blood) but different.

endless, you got 2, that has to be a pain in the rear! I know its all about training, but damn, mine is a monster I cant imagine living with 2. Mine was bred to be oversized, so shes 100lbs. her brothers are 125lbs. both all muscle, except mine could stand to lose about 5-6 pounds (its her holiday weight )

when she is on the love seat, she takes up exactly half when curving her self around (dog fetal position I guess) but when she lays out, there is no sitting on the couch!

I wish your 2 dogs could come over for a day just to scare the crap out of my parents! My mom fears her a bit, knows she's harmless but fears her nonetheless. It seems that everytime my mother is here and sits on the loveseat Nelly (Dog) will get right next to her and slowly but surely start to strech out, within 10 mins my mom is kicked off the seat, or has a giant head (or even bigger butt) right on her lap.

Let me ask you one more question Endless when your dogs wag their "tails" (thats if you have them docked) does it look like a finger waveing back and forth saying "no?" My sister swears its not a tail but a finger!, when people are around she will say "don't worry Nelly likes you the finger is moving" LOL
