It's fast, but it looks like a smelly old broken-down running shoe. It's also tiny, and the driver looks like a clown sticking out of the cockpit from the waist up. Enjoy!

Umm, no. On both counts... First, the M-Roadster is about $46,000, and figure at least $6K for the Supercharger. That makes the cost diff less than $6K, not $30K. Secondly, even a super-charged S2K is going to have trouble (in a straight line) against a new M-roadster.

QueRAM
2001s have the 315hp engine.
You are correct... However, it wasn't available in the US until June '01. I incorrectly assumed they called it a '02

I dont think S2000 is designed for drag racing.

If you want straight away acceleration, why not a bike ? or a big old V8 ? Maybe we need someone here who is better with words to explain what is it about owning a S2000. Such feelings are hard to describe with words. For me that is ....

Actually the 240hp engine was only for the US market, the rest of the world got the old 321hp engine that was in the Euro e36 M3 as well. As such even the M Coupes and M Roadsters overseas were a heckuva faster and the new engine isn't *that* much of an improvement as we're seeing it here in the US of A.

It's got a great engine from the M3.
I'd love to drive one. I would not want to own one though.
It's still one of the ugliest car I have ever seen.
If it's drives like the previous m roadster, it wouldn't be all the fun to drive either, except for the straight line power.
A one day rental would make a trip to drag strip quite interesting.

DavidY,

Yeah...I like the new M Coupe/Roadster also. But it's a bit out of my price range...that's why I got the S2000.

I currently have a Z3 2.8 with some Dinan mods and I'm looking to upgrade.

I'm looking at the M Roadster, S2000, and Boxter S. The S2000 seems to be the best value for me. However, living in the bay area means dealing with traffic. I LOVE the S2000 up high... the sound is intoxicating and the performance excellent, but I do find it lacking down low.

Does anyone know if there are any mods... that will improve low RPM performance (software?)... I imagine that airflow is already pretty good so I doubt that a cold air intake will do any thing in the 2K - 4K RPM range.

I owned a 2000 Z3 2.8. While I loved the motor, I was never happy with the handling. It didn't handle, IMHO, as well as the '92 Miata I also had at the same time. I sold both of them, and got the S2K. The power (although not torque) of the Z3, with even better handling than the Miata.

Ultimately, I decided a car that could carve corners well was more important to me than a car that could do smokey burn-outs and 1/4 mile runs. I actually liked the redesigned Z3 (unfortunately the new rear never made it to the M-roadster), but the S2K is also a nicer looking car.

A recent article compared the new M-Roadster to the original Shelby Cobra's. Gobs of torque & power, somewhat overworked suspension that paid a price in at-limit handling. I thought that was a perfect analogy...
