JUST MY OPINION... I feel cars manufactured in Japan are put together just a little bit better than the US. However, where they are engineered makes a huge difference. I've owned several American cars and several Japanese cars. The American cars don't even come close to the quality, durability, and thoroughness of Japanese design.

So to answer the question... Yes I would still buy it if it were made in a US plant. No I would not buy it if it were designed by some flavor of Ford, GM, etc.

The difference between quality of build in Japan vs US are very clear in Honda's service bulletins/ recalls. Ask your local Acura service manager if he gets more bulletins on RL/NSX(Japan) or TL/CL(US). To Honda's credit they do not hesitate to issue service bulletins for even isolated problems. Most other manufaturers will deny a problem exists until an overwhelming number of their dealers report them.

I've had several Honda/Acura's built in both the US and Japan (and Canada too). Overall, I think the Japan built ones have been a little better with fit and finish, but my most recent cars, the Acura TL (US) and the S2000(Japan) have been equally well built and neither show the flaws of my previous US-made Accord. My wife's Civic (Canada) on the other hand still leaves a bit to be desired, but even then, its way better than the American nameplate cars I have the displeasure of renting on business.

Guess I've just been lucky. I've had a lot of American cars and I use American products every day. None of them have really been crappy.

I remember reading an article blip discussing the same issue in Newsweek. They interviewed a representative from Toyota America, I think the CEO or some other upper-level management. He personally said that Toyotas from Japan are built better. I kid you not. I don't remember the exact words, but that's what he said and that's why it made such an impression on me. I thought it was interesting to hear that someone from Toyota America would actually say that.

I share the same opinion. I think cars made in Japan are better overall.

Now keep in mind, this was a while back so things might be different now. So his statement might be more reflective of the time when he said it.

even handbuilt in Japan is a bonus
but I will still get my s2000 if it is made in US
as long as is not made in China or Indonesia...

well, I agree on the part about where its "engineered" also. I mean, look at American cars in general...The designs just don't come close. I mean, look at cars like the Grand Am, what were they thinking? Why do they still insist on using bulky pieces of plastic all over the car, which serve no purpose? They don't even look good. And look at the interior. Why do they still use ugly looking buttons on all they're controls, the dash board of american cars are hideous. Even the vette, magnificent car or course, but I can't stand the damn seats (with those vertical grooves in them...serves no purpose and looks sooooo 80's).

However, there are things that I do like made in the U.S., including tools, clothing, barbecue grills (Webers all the way!), and camping gear.
