mingster, I too was shopping for a matress several months ago. The one we had was only 3 years old and my back was killing me. Well, we took the plunge and ordered a Select Comfort and what a difference!!! This is an air mattress that has individual controls for both sides. Well, the first two night we slept on it, I did not toss and turn at all and my back felt great! My wife also loves it because she likes a softer mattress and I like a firm mattress. She has her side set at 40 while I have mine set at 65.
I purchased this on QVC for approx $1,100 and they shipped it to my front door.
Check this one out!

I also have been round and round looking at mattresses. I have a bad back and didn't care what I spent as long as my back felt good. We bought a Sterns & Foster and it was great - for a week. Then my back started killing me. We went to wash our sheets, and I noticed that the bed had deep impressions where I was sleeping. I measured the deepest part of the impression and it was nearly 2"! (after 1 week). I called the store and had them take the bed back - so much for the Sterns & Fosters 12 ga coils, etc....

We too decided to try the Select Comfort. It's been almost 1 year and my back has never felt better. I highly recommend it.

txst,
just curious, what # do you set your side of the mattress on? I too have a bad back and currently have my side set on 70.

Why not try voodoo, it has not scientific basis either.

Seriously, if you want a better back, loose weight and
exercise. Absent injury, the overwhelming majority of
people with back problems are overweight and out
of shape.

firsts2k:

I usually set mine around 60 - 65. Sometimes I experiment going +/- 10, but usually I have it around there.

We don't have the pillow top. In the past, the cotton batting on previous mattresses has sagged after about 1 year.

Mingster,

A new mattress does improve the shnoozing!

I thought you were close to coming an MBA (I am a no good MBA myself).

What I mean here, is a little research in an industry goes a long way.

Most of the mattress guts are made by one company (Leggett and Platt).

Every (Pricey Brand) manufacturer does a little this or that to differentiate themselves.

We bought a King Coil from one of those 800 number outfits (No brick and Morter Overhead)for around $350 delivered and it is great.

They delivered it like 2 hours after the call was made.
