Default Mazda MX-5 MPS, possible S2000 threat.

This is the official picture of Mazda MX-5 Miata MPS set to appear at next month's Frankfurt Motor Show.

It has colour-coded hard top, Mazda speed modified suspension and a new 1,930cc unit developing 200bhp

as a previous owner of a miata, who was very happy with his car,
i think the question to ask is anyone really gonna spend 30000 plus for a miata...most miata owners buy the base model..the fully loaded miatas that retail for 28500 are not really selling. most of the miatas sold are in the 22000 range. another thing miata owners typically are not performance oriented. i'm not knocking the cars, they are great.. just my 2 bits

I saw a review recently and the performance numbers are a good bit better that the current Miata, but still not quite up to the S2000. It is a pretty good looking car, though.

Keep in mind, these cars usually get toned down a pretty decent amount when they actually hit the market. Remember the RSX with Recaros and Brembo brakes?

That car has a racing (not production durability) motor. The time is coming though, when most roadsters will out perform our current car. Roadster performance is heating up. Other vendors won't make the mistake of lower torque.

Ray, do you work for Honda, Mazda or a car mag? Just curious.

Ps. I like the look of the new mazda. Competition is what drives the market.

The next gen Miata, not next year, but in 2004 is going to be built on the new RX8 platform which should be much more structurally rigid than the current one. This MPS that they are showing in Frankfurt has a Japanese racing engine that will not meet U.S. emissions. It would be nice to get about 200 hp in the current Miata but I would not hold my breath for anything that major until the 2004 model arrives. While the RX8 will have an all new rotary engine, the next Miata will use one of a new line of small but high output and high reving four cylinders.

Correct me if I'm wrong but isn't i-VTEC more about midrange touque than max HP?
